my mechanic says I have to replace the ignition system when I replace the starter motor on my 1997 golf stick shift

- The ignition switch sticks in in start position and this resulted in damaging the starter

- The car can only be started by rolling it down the driveway. The starter is shot.

The mechanic stated that we need to replace the ignition switch because we are replacing the starter. I have never heard this before.

The ignition replacement is a large paart of the steering column not just a switch.

I would repair the defective ignition switch and retest, then if the starter is damaged replace it, but hold off on the other parts until the above has been done and system retested. Sounds like someone wants to sell you a bunch of work without doing the tests first, very common I'm afraid.
