I have a 2002 mini cooper s that has about 81K mi. for the past 2 months i started hearing a screeching sound when i start shifting into first gear. i notice that this usually occurs when the first time i get in the car to drive and before it's gets well into normal operating temperature. its a very slight screeching sound that only happens when shifting to first gear from stop.i have taken to a shop but so far they can't figure it out.

With ignition switch on and engine off activate a window switch... listen for a clicking noise. if there is no noise then start checking fuses and relays. The fuse panel in on the left of the drivers legs. open it up it is well marked and in it you will find a handy fuse puller and spare fuses if they're needed. If you hear the clicking sound then try the Mini cooper Thump. Apply it to the doors midway between the large and small speakers (It may take two or three solid thumps) re-apply as needed
Mini's have had problems in the past with the shift cables coming off or breaking. No worries: the only danger is that you will be stuck in the gear you where in when the cables break. No damage to the car will occur. You should check out the recall notices. Good luck
