Question about 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck 2WD

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Keyless Entry/Security System

Hi All,
My battery went dead while I was at work. I got a jump start and on the way home my alternator output spiked at 18 volts a couple of times. After I got home I put a new battery in and now my keyless entry/security system does not work. I think I had a build up of corrosion on the battery terminals and was not making good contact....that is why my alternator spiked to maximum output. I have tried all suggestions from my owners manual and there is no change.
I contacted Dodge and was told the keyless entry/security system could be affected by voltage spikes.
I purchased the Haynes repair manual for my truck and it does not mention anything about the keyless entry or the security system.
If anybody could help me with keyless entry/security system component location in my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 or with possible causes for my system failure would be greatly appreciated.
I would appreciate any help offered.

I had the same problem, I was told to open the hood and take off only the negative battery terminals for a couple of minutes. Then put same back on. I tried it and it worked with my remote locks now working again.!!!!

    Oh my goodness. Same thing happened to me on my '95 Ford Explorer. I left the lights on accidentally for hours and drained my battery. AAA came out and gave me a jump and I recharged the battery for 1/2 hr after that with the car locked. My husband went to go turn off the car and the keyless entry pad wasn't working. Thankfully we had another key to get in and we got in. The battery was fine, but the keypad on the door was no longer working nor our remote door lock thing for our keychain.

    Oops, I hit enter too quickly. We did the suggestion of taking off only the negative battery terminal for a couple minutes then put it back on. The remote control worked again as well as the keypad on the door for keyless entry!!! Thank you for this advice.

    Oops, I keep hitting enter too quickly. I had called the local Ford Service and they were going to charge me $99.99 to look at it and then probably another $200+ to put a part that my car didn't need in it. I am so grateful for this advice as we were able to fix it within a few minutes. The hardest part was taking the bolt off the terminal and putting it back on. Thanks so much!

Your keyless/security system may have been damaged by the spikes. But, assuming you've already checked all the fuses, I would start by having the alternator tested. I would also check the alternator wire connection to the power distribution center (pdc). It can loosen and cause different problems.

Free dodge ram 1500 trouble shooting


I had the same problem...I changed the battery ..took it to a mechanic...started fine all day for him ...He still said he changed 2 relay switches and charged me 300...He just said they were in the engine ..I think it had alot to do with the battery...

2003 dodge ram 1500, won't start, red security light flashes


The probably installed an overlay harness past the SKIM module it think the car it being hot wired it is a security feature. They need the install the interlock system prior to the SKIM module to keep it from locking up.

Security light flash no security system on truck


sometimes turning the ignition on 3 times quickly without starting will reset the computer. If the van has power locks and keyless entry then try using only the keyless entry. Sometimes your car wont have a alarm but an anti theft device which will not allow it to start if it goes off or something triggers it.

2006 power door locks wont`work


Resistor is blown...take the truck to an automotive electronics/stereo shop that installs keyless entry systems ($89) and put an aftermarket keyless on the truck. They'll have to trouble-shoot the system to make the installation of the new keyless!

Cost of redoing keyless entry


If you need to purchase new remotes, it would be around $120-140 depending upon the labor rate at the dealership. If you already have the remotes and just need them programmed, it can be done for under $75 as it will only take about half an hour at the dealership.
