Question about 1991 Ford Taurus

Runs then dies think its heat related and electrical

I have a 95 Taurus GL with a 3.8. I bought it last year at the end of the summer from a friend whose wife drove this car about 3 miles each way to work. When I drove it for about a half hour it died as if it were out of gas. If I waited 10 minutes it would restart and I could drive it for another half hour. The heat gauge would reach about halfway and that seemed to trigger the event. I drove it all winter with no problems until the AC compressor froze up on me and I let it set for about 3 months until it warmed up enough outside to fix it. Now the same problem is much worse. After about 20 minutes it dies and you need to let it set for an hour or so before you can restart it. A mechanic friend of mine told me to replace the distributor and I replaced it with one from a junk yard - that didn't fix it. I replaced the coil with a new one from Autozone - that didn't fix it. I replace the fuel filter - that didn't fix it. If I give it a shot of starting fluid it takes off and runs fine until the starting fluid is used up. My mechanic friend says that he doesn't think it is a fuel pump because he has never heard of one being "babied" like this for over a year. Usually once or twice and then its Kaput. It seems like there is a shutoff to the fuel injectors and then it resets. Any suggestions?

1995 Taurus - Same issue. First occurance was about 8 months ago. Ended up noticeing the following:

Happened when gas gause showed less than half a tank.
Happened when temp gauge was in middle low end
    Happened when on an incline.

I was able to get a fuel filter replaced and that seemed to solve the issue. However the problem is back. After replaceing a fuel filter a second time same issue.

I have been able to avoid it up till now by keeping the tank above the halfway line but money got tight and had to let it slip below half a tank.

    Any ideas?

I finally got my problem fixed, maybe this will work for you. It was the mass air flow sensor. Its easy to replace, it sits right on top of the "tube" that goes from your air filter into the plenum. However, they are extraordinarily expensive for such a little item. They are about 100 dollars. I got mine from a junk yard for 10 and it worked fine. The day I got it fixed, however, I got rear ended in this car and it was totalled, so I can't tell you if it would have been a permanent fix, but it worked superbly for a day. Good luck.

I am having the same problem with my 1991ford taurus. If I drive it too long
it will for no reason die on me and then I have to let it sit for a while and then
I can get it started again but it you do not let it sit long enough you can only drive
alittle longer and it will die on you again. So then you have to sit a good 30minutes
or more and then I can usually make it home. If any one is having the same problem
I would really appreciate some it put. At this point I really can afford a new car right

My 2001 bmw ci run, and then just shut off, after a few minute it will run again, and shut off while driving it. Please Help

You need to determine if it losing electrics or fuel. Does it sputter as it dies, or just dead off? Dead off usually means spark circuit has been interrupted. Think of things such as bad coil, crank sensor, ignition module. These items have electrical coils inside, which can develop a crack in a wire which heats as running and fails, then cools and will run again. If it seems fuel related, first check for bad gas cap vent, then use fuel pressure gauge situated so that you can see it while driving and see if pressure drops just before car dies. This could mean bad fuel pump, dirty filter, bad relay.

How is your fuel filter? dirty or clean. You wana determine if it is electrical or fuel related. Sounds like fuel related since it seems to start for you, but stops running

91 Geo Storm Gsi running just fine, one day I lost power driving 65, check engine light came on and was flickering, mph arm going up and down but didn't die then. Then it was ok.That happened 2 times...

Most engines don't fair well under extreme heat. It's apparent you might have some electrical issue's. Your rpm's or mph arm going up and down could be faulty speed sensor would cause arm problem. I think you may have more than one problem, the car shutting off is due to engine over-heating. Check cooling system-thermostat, water pump, radiator, engine fans and coolant temp sensor and fan relay's. It could be as simple as blown radiator hose.

Hi i have a 1992 dodge ramcharger with a 318 engine.runs for 10 to 15 minutes then dies,then will crank but not start,not getting spark.i have replaced fuel pump,fuel filter,fuel lines,ignition coil,pick...

Look for some electrical or fuel related heat affected problem ... Something stops working when the car gets to operating temperature. Beyond that, I can't be more specific, Tony. Good luck ... When you find it ... post your answer please.

1984 toyota pickup, 22R engine, stalls out when driving 2-8 miles

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the rubber fuel lines being old and cracked. The hoses would warm up and fuel would squirt out of the cracks. I had to replace three fuel line hoses and it has been running great ever since. Good luck.

It may be the torque converter clutch solonoid in the transmission , not a major problem. When the car heats up and dies it will feel sort of like comming to a stop in four gear in a standart transmission with out pushing in the clutch ( bucking type feeling ) what the T.C.C. solonoind does is disengauge the engine from the flywheel when you are comming to a stop ( 125 auto transmissions had a lot of problems with that) hope this is helpful. peace S.R.
