Question about 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX

1 Answer

Automatic trans shifter stuck in drive.

The shifter has been sticking alot lately. Today it got stuck in drive and won't move. The button on the shifter that you push in to change gears came out and won't stay in when you put it back in.

Our shift button is stuck and won't shift properly. It's a fight to get it in and out of park.

Shifter does not stay exactly in park. If I lift the shifter up when starting then move it immediately into gear it works fine but if I don't then the shifter does not want to move out of park and into gear.

Automatic gear shift in 94 toyota tercel stuck

what is stuck?

the linkage or the cable from the shifter to the trans.?

block the tires so the car can not roll away...
open the hood and remove the cable from the shifter on the transmission.
see if you can manualy move the shifter on the trans.
if that moves... you may need to replace the cable (shift linkage)

The front of the handle has a large "U" clip. Use a screw drive and pry the clip out. It's a lot easier to do when the shifter is pulled all the way back to "1" or "2" but is doable in park still. The handle will then pull up. There will be a plastic piece in it that pushes down to release the lock in the shifter assembly. If when you push the plastic piece down it doesn't release the lock you will have to remove the shifter cover and take a look inside, to see what broke. It may require replacing the whole shifter assembly. You should be able to find the complete assembly used for fairly cheap.

Transmition stuck in drive

sounds like shifter cable busted... pop the hood and look at drivers side, have another person move the shifter so you can locate the cable... then find the arm coming off the transmission move it all the way one direction it will be either park or low range and that should get you moving again...

Auto Trans shifter stuck in Park

Apparently there's a latch that catches the shifter, its a yellow piece of plastic (1992 auto 240) I busted it off cause it was gonna make me late for work haha! silly me didnt bother to look in the manual till it was to late but its in there and you can disingage it by sticking your finger in the shifter housing and lifting it or something like that - check your manual !
