Question about Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

Burning oil-no visible leak. Seems as though engine is loosing pressure. sputtering from exhaust pipe. No smoke coming from pipe except on occassions when you hear a rattle and the car loose pressure then a puf of white smoke comes out. this only happens every once in a while. Check engine lite is flashing

We will be taking the car to a Japaneese Auto Center/Specialisy.

The dealership is estimayting between $4500 -$5500 for a replacing the engine and converter. Dealerships are usually a bit high.

Thanks for your assistance. You were very helpful

Car shakes and rattles upon start and you have to floor it just to get it to move while in gear. I let it run for about 20 minutes but no improvement

For some reason the Live Session froze. Our apologies for any inconvenience. Please find below the last part of my posts in case you were not able to view them.
photo7 says:
what about the piston rings

Benimur says:
that could be checked with a compression tester at your dealer

Benimur says:
so for the moment course of action would include: compression test
dye to determine where the oil went, if no trace found then it could be assumed was burned; change the catalyctic converter, it went as a direct result of oil in the exhaust system

Benimur says:
some remedial/temporary workaround includes installation of an aftermarket oil cooler with its own fan; maintain a lower engine temperature by removing the thermostat (not applicable to cold regions) and wiring the radiator fan to continously work.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

I was notified of the additional comments in our Live Session. Appreciate the update and I understand the disconnect.

    To your concerns:

    So what causes the oil to burn like that - most likely worn piston rings; another possibility are valve seals;

    How do we prevent it? - it could no longer be prevented since the problem is already there, if you should so decide to overhaul or replace the engine, prevention would then be applicable and you could try decreasing the time between oil change, adding an oil cooler, improve the overall engine cooling system to lower the operating temperature;

If we change the converter do we just wait till that one get cloged again and replace it - unfortunately if the problem with the oil burning is not corrected, then the new catalyctic converter would also go bad some time in the future.

P420-Catalytic Converter - pls see above
P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire - since changing coil pack is not corrective, you may need to check the high tension/sparkplug wires. In some instances, re-routing the wire might help.

oil consumption test- consuming oil through engine/piston rings burning in converter clogging it - this just confirms what we have discussed.

Your options then are rather limited; have the engine overhauled or have it replaced. You may have to consider if the repair/replacement is economically reasonable and then explore other options.

White smoke from engine

Coolant leaking on engine and burning

Why is my car losing antifreeze but there are no visible leaks, even under pressure??

Usually means you have a head gasket leaking coolant into the cylinders and the engine is burning it out the exhaust pipe. Once the leak gets bigger than what the cylinders can burn, it will show up in the engine oil.

The oil light is on. I check the oil stick and its has the recommended amount. When you step on the gas, the light turns off. I noticed it smells burned oil; must be from an oil leak that probably drips...

The dash light indicates oil pressure. When idleing the pressure drops too low and and light comes on. As it revs up, pressure increases.. light goes off.
You should go here and read about low pressure. Too much to copy and paste here.

The small leak onto the exhaust maybe more than just a nuisance, it is a fire hazard. Potential to catch fire. Clean off the COLD header and front pipe with a non flamable solvent cleaner. Also the engine case around the area. You may find the source of the leak.

My 2002 lincoln LS is sputtering white smoke out the exhaust and leaking power steering fluid severily. I can't drive more than 5 miles w/o putting more fluid in.

You can not use the vehicle at all

Repair the P/S Leak

It may be fluid burning off the exhaust

You don't want white smoke coming from inside
the exhaust system, or you got coolant in the
engine cylinders and big problems.

Burning smell and smoke coming from hood

you may have an oil leak and the oil is burning off of the hot exhaust or engine youll have to open the hood in order to decipher where the oil is coming from. or if its even oil it could be transmission fluid coolant a number of things youll have to see if you can tell exactly what it is thats leaking but my best guess is its probably oil.if it is oil its more than likely coming from the valve cover. id check there first.

The car smells like it is burning oil and sometimes smokes what could it be?

Might be a gasket leak that drips into or on the exhaust manifolds or pipes.

check if there is visible smoke coming out of the exhaust after using your car for like an hour. If there is visible smoke your car's engine is probably leaking oil from the inside. You need to have your engine rebuilt. If the theres no visible smoke, try to check if your car is loosing water from the water reservoir really fast. Also, check if your radiator fan is still okay.
