You have a problem with your starter solenoid. the contacts are worn out and needs to be replaced.

it is at the side of the starter. it is where the big wire from the battery is connected.

i hope i answered ur question..

tnx,

How do i know if my battery is going out

I assume you are talking about the lead-acid starting battery here.

1) The battery voltage at rest will read less than 12.5 volts.
2) With the headlights turned on try starting the car. If they dim considerably when cranking then the battery is likely almost useless.
3) When cranking the car the engine will sound as if it is being turned very slowly.
4) When almost completely dead the engine won't crank when starting and you may hear a clicking sound under the hood/bonnet.
5) When completely dead, even the dashboard lights will not illuminate with the side-lights turned on.

My 1997 chevy lumina will not start it just makes a clicking sound when i tr to turn te key

Sounds as if you have a bad starter. The vehicle running differently when cold is a whole different issue that has nothing to do with the starter. Below is a picture of the starter and its location. You can have someone turn the key as if to start the car while you actually touch the starter. If it is bad you will feel it trying to enguage or click inside. I'm guessing that's the clicking noise you hear. If the vehicle is in a bad location and you need to move it in order to replace the starter, again while someone is turning the key to start the car you can tap on it with a small hammer or something and GM starters are pretty good about loosening up and starting while you are tapping on it. This doesn't fix the problem it just will get you going so you can move it. This "tapping" works about 85 percent of the time on GM starters. Either way if you feel the starter trying to go with somebody turning the key, more than likely you are dealing with a bad starter. Hope this helps.

When I try to start my 2008 Pontiac G6 the only sound is a sort of clicking and then three messages come up on the info radio display. The messages are: "Service traction" "Service...

The clicking you are hearing is the starter solenoid attempting to engage your flywheel of the engine. So you do have some battery life and your battery cables aren't totally bad. So now we need to try to determine what the problem is.

First, try to jump start the car. If that works and the car starts. IMMEDIATELY, take it to an auto parts store and ask them to test your battery and alternator. Replace whichever one is bad.

If it doesn't start, then it is either your starting circuit or the engine. So you need to take off your serpentine belt and try to turn the engine (in neutral or out of gear) by hand (actually with a large socket wrench). If it turns, then you have either a bad starter solenoid or a bad starter - replace them! If you can't turn the engine by hand then the problem is internal to the engine and something is locking your flywheel.

The other warning messages are not uncommon if you attempt to start your vehicle and it doesn't start.

Sounds like you have a bad battery cable connection at the battery or the starter. Take the cables off and clean the battery post and cable ends. check to ensure the cable at the starter is tight with a good connection. With it clicking it sounds to be one of these problems but a possible bad solenoid. I would not mess with the distributor as you will start getting into some money, when these few things could be your problem solver. Good Luck.

well is the battery draining over the time its sitting?
could be a bad battery or alternator, and/or you might have something on the car constantly draining power from the battery.
best to have it looked at by a mechanic.

Car not starting

starter motor is jammed. solenoid on the starter is sticking. if its a manual gearbox put the car bin 4th gear, release the handbrake and rock the car back and forth.if you hear a clunk then the solenoid has released. try starting the car again. if its an automatic remove the stater motor and investgate. either way your starter motor needs overhaul or replacing

Starting problems

if this problem persists then you could check a few things on it, like on the times when its not even making a noise when trying to turn the key, use rubber/wooden object and tap the starter motor but not touching the contacts on the back. if this amkes it spring into life then it will be your starter motor if this does nothing then it will be a dodgy battery supply. does it also make like a screaching noise while trying to start? if so then definitely your starter motor
