Auto or manual? If it is an auto it maybe that the reverse valve seals are stuffed or it could be the selector is not engaging properly or your bell maybe not getting the oil reqired. Is the car sluggish when you drive forward and labours to change gears? Check your gearbox oil level and if that is fine it could be that the pickup for the gearbox is partially or completely blocked. But if this was the case I would expect you would have no gears forward or reverse, if it is valves or valve seals the gearbox will need to be pulled apart and the valves and seals will need to be replaced. If the car is manual it could be the meshing for reverse gear is stuffed and it may also be low on oil, If it is meshing you will need the gearbox serviced by a qualified tech as the gearbox will need to come apart and the reverse meshing replaced. Considering you never mentioned a grinding noise when it won't go into reverse I suspect it is auto. So most likely valve seals, as a auto works on oil preasure in the gearbox bell house and without it it won't change gears or engage them.

Its can be both modulator valve or signs of a transmission going bad.

check the shifter as it should have the reverse contact in the console, if the shifter has some play in it then the contacts for the switch could have become damaged.. good luck

well if the clutch is fine and your box is fine.. then its most likely your gear linkage.. these are adjustable... the linkages are also very bad for siezing up...

1998 VW Golf with a manual transmission. It is popping out of reverse and also, while shifting through the gears it is really hesitant to get going in each gear. Seems to be most noticable in first gear...

I had the same problem when I bought my GTI a few years back. It turned out that the reverse gear was shot which resulted in a new transmission. It kinda sounds like you may be in the same boat.

Problems with gear box

Hi

If the clutch feels ok and isn't biting right at the bottom or right at the top then it sounds like its time for a recon or 2nd hand gearbox to be fitted.

I recently fitted a 2nd gearbox to a seat ibiza GTi which actually has the 2.0 Golf engine fitted to it and it wasn't too bad at all, but it is adviseable to fit a clutch kit whilst the box is off.

Very best regards

Geordie
