It sounds like you may have one coil pack dropping out. If you mark and remove all of the plug wires at the coils, then have an assistant crank the engine briefly, the coil that has no spark, or poor spark between the towers would be the culprit. Switch it around with another coil. (usually the hold down bolts are 5.5 mm) If the problem follows the coil, it's a bad coil. I f the problem remains in the same position, you have a bad transistor in the mudule and the module will need to be replaced. Good luck, and contact me if this is not the problem, or if you need frthur assistance.

FYI, just to let you all know, I too had these problems. Changed crackshaft sensor, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, mass airflow, plugs, plug wire set, module, coverter, all to no avail. Moreover, took it to 4 different mechanics all suggesed I replace one or more of the above...possibly defected parts. To make a long story short, I decided to replace the new parts with the old parts that I had saved. I started with the module and removed the coil packs and when I lifted the module plate from where it sat on the engine plate I found oil inbetween them. I cleaned both and reinstalled and the car ran like new again.

Problem was a leaking valve gasket, which is directly on the side of the module. Just wanted to share this with others. Check if there is any oil between the plates, will save you a lot of money and fustration.

Car shakes on start up and rpms are low. When I accelerate and it goes over 1000 the shaking stops. If I turn the car off and on again with 5-10 minutes there's no shaking. Golf CL 1997 1.8L

Hi Bianca,
Say, is your check engine light is on? If it is you can go to Autozone or Oreilly's and have all the engine codes pulled for free. I would suggest doing that first and then going from there,
