Does my 1996 honda accord have a vehicle speed sensor

most old cars have a speedo cable.
is the odometer dead too. (we need that answer now)

there are 3 class evolutionary systems.
cable
electric sender to cluster
and sender to PCM and PCM drives cluster.
but honda does this on diffr, dates than most cars. (i learned)

so lets do that. we login to alldata.com and look , so can you at any time,
once a month i do random cars.
what engine, sometimes this varies by engine, and trans.
neither stated so Ill toss coin each time.
a/t trans.
1996
has electronic (hall) speed sensor VSS and runs
engine, cruise. odometer and cluster.

the 96 has no speedo cable, and works in modern mode, very advance for this time
also any scan tool on earth fits the PCM scan port
and if VSS is dead, it tells you that with a DTC , vss dead.
saving all that work wondering why it dont work.
see/?
PCM must see it work
and cluster
and cruise
if only cluster fails, and both speedo and odometer then its bad.
if only speedo fails but not odometer , then speedo meter is bad.
its that easy.

Speedometer not working in a 1999 chevy trailblazer

Is this an analog or digital speedo? If analog, three possibilities come to mind: 1. broken speedo cable; 2. broken speedo head assembly: broken speedo drive gear in the transmission final drive/output shaft area. If digital, could be many things.

1992 Chevrolet Camaro, speedometer is not working, how should I trouble shoot?

If it's a mechanical speedo, there should be a cable running to the side of the transmission. You can disconnect the cable housing and spin the cable with a drill to see if the speedo works. If it does not then check for a broken cable or disconnected cable behind the speedo. If cable is good then either the speedo head is bad or the output gear at the trans is worn out.

My speedometer isn't working on my 1987 Samurai Suzuki

Check vehicle speed sensor or wiring, check engine light should be "on".If light not on bad speedo head in dash.If cable driven[unlikely] check for a broken cable from trans to dash.

Speedometer Cable replacement

A universal kit will work for your application. Most of the time the center cable is what is damaged.

1. Remove speedometer cable from transmission
2. Remove speedo gear retainer and remove speedo gear.
3. Pull out cable from sheath - If broken you will only get part of it
4. Remove instrument panel and pull out section of cable still trapped in cable sheath if applicable.

For re install follow directions on package.

Pointers

1. Cable appears un-damaged: Check to make sure the speedo gear is not damaged where the cable enters it. Then also check the back of the speedo head cable hole for damage.
2. You can measure you two broken pieces to arrive at an appropriate length for ordering purposes.
3. Make sure this is well lubricated on install otherwise the speedo can jump up and down or damage the new cable.

Speedometer is not working

I would suspect the speedometer cable is broken. It is not easily removed when it's broken.

You have to access the speedo head behind the instrument panel to remove the top piece, and remove the bottom piece by taking the cable housing loose at the transmission.

Then you can insert the new one from the bottom end -- it may take some finesse since both ends of the cable have a square cross-section which has to be inserted into the gear & head.

Speedometer cable

unscrew other side as well at back of speedo ..pull it out that way...also if damaged it wont pull through.. cut broken end off and then pull through.....worst case it has come apart (the inner square ended cable you are replacing)..and you need to replace the whole speedo assembl;y with case and cable ..good luck

How to install speedometer cable

The vehicle will have to be jacked in the air safely to remove the cable from the trans. Some fluid will come out too,so have a catch basin in place. You have to climb onto the floor board, and lay on your back looking up into the underside of the dash.Locate the speedo cable and follow it up to the speedo head with your hand. When you reach the area where the cable dead ends into the speedo head, feel around for a locking clip or tab.You will either squeeze or lift the tab,and this will release the old cable from the speedo head.Pull the cable through the firewall grommet, and remove the cable.Reverse to reinstall. There may be a plastic gear on the trans end of the cable that has to be removed and reinstalled on the new cable. The gear is removed by removing the metal retainer clip shaped like a horseshoe.Good luck.
