1995 Prizm...Air Conditioning...Only works intermittantly
At about 130K miles had no a/c problems. Just recently replaced the timing belt and I don't know if it is conicidental or not, but about 300 miles after that, the a/c started acting up. The a/c will run cold until about 15-20 minutes of driving and then it will shut itself off. This happens every time, regardless of whether the a/c is running or not for those 15-20 mins prior...it won't work after the engine has been on for that length of time. In Arizona, in the middle of July, this is torture! I took the car in and diagnostics were run...no problems were found...no leaks, no frion issues, etc. The mechanic took the car for a test drive and of course the a/c was ice cold...because he had not driven it around for the length of time that makes it shut itself off.

You may have one of 2 things going on, first the AC compressor cycling switch ( located in the low pressure AC line) is sticking open, and the 2nd the field coil for the AC compressor clutch goes open when hot. When it quits get a 12 volt test light and see if the AC compressor has power to it. Hope this helps

replace alternator belt.you need to loosen alternator upper and lower belt then push alternator forward to slip off drive belt.if you have the prizim GSI. you need to raise and support the vechicle safely.remove the power steering and air conditioning drive belts.then loosen the lower mounting bolt and nut from the alternator bracket.then remove the alternator drive belt.
Might be anything but first I will inspect and replace the air filter. Other reason might be a lover compression test result. If it is 70 psi, then engine hesitates, but some people continue to drive and when it goes down to 60 psi the engine refuses to run . One more reason might be ignition timing and the strength of spark. The distributor, wires and spark plugs have to be inspected, and replaced if necessary. Finally another reason might be valve timing. This is related with the timing belt. If this is replaced please disregard this. I had a 90 ties Geo Prizm, and was making an average 30 miles per gallon. Gradually dropped at 26 mile per gallon. I replaced the timing belt and a I got again 30 miles per gallon. If your car will be sent in our car repair shop, these will be the first tests we will perform, to find the problem. Geo Prizm is a nice car, and very easy to take care with. If you will check this points by yourself, then you can save money and hope solve your problem.
