How do I connect jumper cables to my '97 Olds Silhouette battery? I would like to use my minivan to jump start my other car but I can't reach the battery terminals (or even see them!) because the battery is buried underneath a metal brace and a lot of other equipment. Thanks very much!
The positive terminal is covered by a red plastic cap that must be pulled off then attach the red or positive jumper cable there then attach the ground or black cable to either a bolt on the brace that is in your way or the alternator bracket or another bracket that is attached to the engine block or frame directly without any rubber mounting bushings and preferably not painted.

Check connection of battery terminals to it's related cables. Try using one of the jumper cables to connect negative of battery to chassis.if still fail, try connecting to engine block. If fail, try recharging/replacing battery. Lights may stay bright but battery may mot have enough amperage to turn starter motor.
Take note of any radio codes. If you don't know them, get a small or another 12v battery, a set of small jumper leads, connect the leads clips to the matching cables on the car at the battery. You are now supplying a small current in parallel. Using a buddy to hold the battery terminals away from the bodywork remove the negative first, then the positive. Remove battery and replace with new battery. Reattach positive terminal first then negative, then remove small jumper cables and it should have preserved your codes etc.
Could be several things, but begin by removing battery cables and cleaning them and battery terminals well. Even if they look ok, they can corrode and lose connection. Next, check solenoid. You can use jumper cables to bypass solenoid if you are careful, just to test and see that starter will engage.
I ran into a similar problem with a Cavalier, turns out that the on-board computer needs to have constant power. Even if the battery is very low or even dead, it still has to be connected. If the battery is removed it breaks the circuit and stops the command that lets the engine start. After the new battery was installed it would crank but not start, the dealership told me that I had to have it towed to them to have the comp reset, which would have cost around $150 total. Thankfully a mechanic friend of mine had a diagnostic machine and was able to reset it for me - cost me a case of beer. He then showed me a (not so simple) trick around this for the future. Once it is running again remember this. 1 Have the new battery and jumper cables ready, 2 Loosen the battery terminals on the dead battery but DON'T take them off. 3 Connect jumpers to the car battery cables and to the new battery, like you were jump starting from just the new battery. 4 Remove the terminal cables from the dead one in the car and remove dead battery (be careful not to let them come off the cables OR the good battery) it's OK if it disconnects briefly, but reconnect it A.S.A.P. 5 Put the new battery in and connect the terminals BEFORE removing jumper cables. Once they're on the terminals just take away the jumpers and tighten the nuts. That's how you change a battery without letting the car ever lose power. Hope that helps Jose. Good luck, safe driving. That's usually a corroded, burnt, crusty or loose battery terminal (connector), post, nut or wire. A seasoned mechanic knows how to check, tighten and clean all battery connection points and that lousy cheap cables can prevent a successful jump. You can check your battery in another car to see if it has the cold cranking amps necessary. A starter and a battery usually will go intermittent before going totally bad. it is dangerous around explosive fumes, such as a charging battery or fuel, but pass-touching or bumping the pos/neg jumper cables together for a quick test of battery and/or cable power has been the old way of testing for good power at the cables and battery. A good connection will spark very bright and loud - experience a good battery a few times and it is easily learned. Jumping from another battery without running the jumper engine will take a much stronger jump battery, even with good cables - starting the jumper car and letting it charge the dead battery for 3 or 4 minutes is usually enough for a good battery to come back enough to allow start. (Leave the cables on for the start attempt). Don't accidentally touch the cables together while still connected to either battery, they can fuse/weld and burn. Battery acid is toxic, smelly, explosive and will eat holes in your clothes. Don't drop a battery. Don't overcharge a battery, if it smells it is dangerous. I always blow away fumes as I am connecting battery cables. I turn off everything in the car when connecting them.
Which is the problem, no fire, or no crank. No fire means to spark to engine, but engine turns over fine. No crank means engine won't turn over when key is turned. I'm assuming engine will not turn over. Three most common problems. 1. Weak battery (get tested at auto parts store). Will hold charge for short time once started, but loses it when sits overnight. 2. Bad starter. Possible but not likely, still not out of the question. 3. Bad battery cables. This is an easy test. Take a pair of jumper cables and bypass the battery cables by connecting black side of jumper cable to "-" of battery and block of engine, and red of jumper cables to "+" of battery and (tap) Battery terminal post on starter...engine should turn over. Ensure you take all safety precautions to prevent car from moving during this procedure. Best of luck resolving this problem.
if the new battery is good then you have a bad connection to the battery. use a rag to clean the connectors and batt terminals then put a thin smear of vaseline on the terminals before reconnecting. do not use copper paste. if it starts and runs by jumping it, continues to run when jumper cables removed, and the battery light isn't on, on the dash then it can only be the battery connectors or battery condition that's at fault
Your jumper cables are most likely red and black. Locate the positive and negative terminals on your battery, they are marked ( + ) or pos.,that's the red one, and ( - ) or neg. that's the black one. Conect one end of your cables to your battery (doesn't matter which one you do first) make sure you are connecting the other end to the same terminal on the dead battery (that is to say positive to possitive) now do the same with the other cable. There may be a little bit of a spark that's normal when you make the finalconnection. The danger is in taking them off, do it in the same order that you put them on, if you take both cables off at the dead battery and they touch you are going to be having a bad hair day. the thing that most people don't get is you have to have a good clean convention. If you don't try wiggling the clamp on both batteries to make them dig into the terminals. Also there is a huge difference between someone who left the lights on in parking lot and someone with a dead battery on the side of the interstate. The guy in the parking lot has a dead battery, the guy on the side of the road has a dead battery and a dead alternator, he needs a tow truck, not a jump.
sometimes that works, sometimes not. check the lighter if theres power with the key off, or if your cell phone charges with the key off. If not, its not going to keep the memory. I would take 2 jumper wires and connect the new battery to the cables, so that the car never loses power. or take jumper cables from another car and connect to the battery terminals.
