Hello,
It would be very uncommon to have to replace the transmission with those issues. What you may consider doing first, if you already haven't.

1. If you were told you need to replace the transmission, that is a very large expense and warrants getting a second opinion. ( I never tell the second place what the first place said, if they both come to the same conclusion it is more likely to be accurate.)

2. Double check the transmission fluid level. If the fluid level is good then;

3. Have the transmission serviced. New fluid and filter can make a big difference. If that doesn't work then;

4. You may want to have the shift solenoid, and possibly the speed control sensor checked.

I hope this helps you.
Donnie

I have a jerk if I pull away in a low gear or if I stop nd go my bakkie jerks I did check the plugs nd plug wires no fault there what can it be ?

Not sure whether you're running an automatic or manual trans, but, If you're jerking or maybe pulsing when you touch your brake pedal it could be you have warped rotors. If it's an automatic then your trans could be slipping, if it's a manual trans then your clutch could be slipping or your throw-out bearing may not be letting the clutch plate disengage all the way.

1991 chevy lumina automatic transmission, slips in 4th and overdrive, and you can push the car in all gears except park

Well, you can push any automatic trans car in any gear except park.
As for slipping in overdrive which is 4th gear, if the trans is full of fluid, you're probably looking at replacing it to fix it.
Could be a list of things such as clutches or dirt in the valve body.

It sounds like the shift linkage is badly worn where the gear lever is supported on the shaft. Somtimes there is a plastic bush which ends up wearing out and disintegrating causing the slop you have described. You will need to remove the gear lever assembly from the vehicle to work on it. You should be able to get a replacement bush to repair it.

U are going to need to overhaul the transmission here, the smoke is the trans overheating from excessive slippage i suspect.code for wrong gear ratio's mean the input and output shaft speed are out of symc for the gear the trans is in, the 3rd or 4th gear is the usual codes, this sometimes is caused by defective speed sensors but most times the trans is slipping and the TCM detects that and sets a code

Is it gicving you a code (P0502)? If so, that is my problem and I was informed it was a speed control sensor and it will cause it to shift rough from 1 st to 2 nd gear.
