Your keyless remote is equipped with 2 different systems. There is the RF system (long range, lock control only) and the IR system (short range, locks and convenience features such as remote window roll-up and roll-down). It sounds like your RF system isn't working. The only way to test the system, that I know of, is with a Mercedes scanner. It is likely a bad remote.
1) Get in and close all doors. 2) Turn on the ingition and turn off quickly. (No more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds. 3) Remove the 1st key. 4) Hold the key up near your left shoulder (this is so it is closer to the remote reciever antenna - someone else suggested this). 5) Hold down the unlock button (which is button 1 on my key) and press the lock button 3 times (center button on my key). Release the unlock button and the doors lock which confirms the operation. 6) Quickly repeat steps 4 & 5 for key #2 etc. If it does not work, try doing the keys in opposite order. Key 2 then key1, vs 1 then 2
I had same problem. Driver door would lock/unlock with key in keyhole in door, but not with fob, and other doors would not lock/unlock. Even once inside none of the doors would lock/unlock with lock switch, or even by pulling handles. Mechanic (very trustworthy) explained I needed a new control module (cost me $600). Good Luck. $600 is better than having to roll down the windows so Grandma can Luke Duke it outta the car.
The connector on the rear lights gets burnt and you have to replace the connector, the burnt wire, and the taillight assembly. For the locks it could be a few things. Does the central lock button work all the doors? Does the remote function work with any doors, or trunk? Could be anything from the driver's door lock actuator to the general module for the car. If you have a scanner to check the ZKE module and code "general locking, unlocking relay" is there then a new general module is needed. The relays are built into it.
insert the key into the drivers side or passender side front door, twist the key and pull open on the handle at the same time and the door will open. It might take a few times to get it, but this does work, source BMW AG Munich.
if you have a bmw 325i 2001 model try this solution:
if you have one key , go on to the next step. if you have more than one key, like two or more than follow this procedure.
step one: unlock the doors with your key and get in and close the doors but do not lock them
step two: put your key into the ignition and turn it but not to start the engine, do this less than 5 seconds
step three: take the key out of the ignition and put it near the shifter. press and hold the unlock button while pressing the lock button 3 times. you have 30 seconds to do this. the doors should lock and unlock automatically signalling that it the key has been reprogrammed. if you have more than one key follow those steps for each one except for step one. remmember you have only 30 seconds for each key. that should help you.
