Won't start I pulled into a gas station to get soda. Came out and my 2001 kia sportage wouldn't start. My check engine light has been on for 2 days. The oil is good and the gas cap tight. Battery seems good because all the lights and instrument panel works. I got that rat tat tat sound when you turn the key. Is this a bad starter or alternator??? Any idea??

What rat tat tat? If you mean the clicking sound, that means that the battery connection is probably corroded or the cable is bad. Clean it up with a tool. Any auto parts store ... about $3. If it is a whine, the starter is bad. If there is a solid click and no turnover, it might be the solenoid relay...but I doubt it. How to get an idea: turn on the headlights and hit the key...if the lights dim significantly, your battery might be bad. If not, check for corrosion or that solenoid. Find out why that light is on!

Gas smell

I had a similar problem with a 2000 Kia Sportage. The check engine light came on all the time. Part of the problem seemed to be the fuel cap having high pressure. Then one fine day I smelled gas fumes from the rear of the vehicle. After removing the fuel pump cover in the rear behind the seats, I found gas coming from a hose from the tank. I then (sometime later) I found a crack in another hose. The hose was from the filler neck. It caused a lack of vapor pressure and a smell. The check engine light now was off.

2007 KIA Sportage check engine light just came on and now stays on all fluid levels are good

Had a similar problem and took it to the dealer - it is a defect which is common to a range of Kia Sportage. Eventually, the engine will not start.
The manufacturer paid for an engine replacement.

Check engine light inside gas tank making a noise

Don't know if it'll help, but, my 2002 Sportage's check engine light came on when I put gas in it and stayed on until I ran out all of that tank full. I asked at that station if anything had been added to their fuel, and after a lot of hee hawing, they admitted they were adding ethanol! So, watch where you buy gas!!
