When you try to start the truck the clynoid will make noise but it will not start

I have the same problem. 1 click when key is turned. jumping will start the engine. The oddest part is it won't start and then 3-5 hours later it will start (no jumping and hasn't been moved).
mechanic i take it to thought it was the starter motor, kept it for a day or so and could not duplicate the 'won't start thing'. It doesn't make sense to me that if its the starter motor why letting it sit for a few hours or a day it will start. If the router (sp?) isn't moved/hasn't moved why will it start. Does yours start 'sometimes and sometimes not' and if you jump it does it start.

If the noise it makes is a series of rapid clicks, check your battery or try to start it with a jump.

If you get a single decisive CLICK, then refer to the solution posted by emissionwiz.

Let us know how it turns out.

Try bypassing the solenoid - use a screwdriver to make contact between the battery cable and the starter post. If the starter kicks/spins, its the solenoid. If it doesn't, it's the starter.

The starter contacts are burnt inside the solenoid, this is a common problem, replace the solenoid or take it apart to verify the problem, the contacts are avail on the internet, very cheap. I am assuming you have a 1990 or newer truck, they all use a Japanese gear reduction light weight starter.

OCCASIONALLY STRANGE NOISE WHEN STARTING I DO HAVE A NEW BATTERY IN THE VEHICLE

If the noise sounds like a grinding/fast spining noise you probably have lost a tooth or two off the flywheel. To check, when it makes that noise stop trying to start it and if standard, put in gear move the car and try again. Or, if automatic put the car in R and move it. In both cases move it means like 4"s. If the noise goes away it is the flywheel teeth.

Saab 1885 900 se has whirling noise when trying to

If the noise is just a spinning sound and not a grinding, than you're starter solinoid is probably bad.
You're best bet is to replace the starter. Hope this helps.

Clicking noise when trying to start car, battery is ok, wont start

That Clicking is the Battery causing it not to Start. You need to Replace that Battery or at Least put a Charger on it for a Couple of hours to see if you can Salvage it for a While.
