Car stalls out after running it for a while

Our car stalls out after going for a short drive. the car runs great up untill it has a run up town and when you are at a light it idles perfect but when you put into gear to go, it stalls. the car will start up just fine again and idle fine, but then it will stall out when trying to go. I have to jump start it from park to drive with about 3000 rpm and it will go. as long as the rpms are up there it will run, after a short stop (say about 20mins) the problem does not appear.

I changed the fuel pump and filter after it failed. The problems started shotly after this change. I also had the head gasket replaced thinking that it was causeing the problems.

With a car of this age, there are many possible culprits.

The easy first start is the battery; Electronic ignition vehicles can be un happy with low voltage. Please take the car and or battery to a parts house like Autozone for a look. They will check your battery. While you are there, please see if they can see if you have any check engine light codes stored on your vehicle.

A TPS is a Throttle Position Sensor that is a possible culprit, and it may show a code from your Check engine light.

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation valve. This can also cause problems like you have! This should also show a code from CEL (check engine light).

By the way, Autozone will check your battery, and CEL for no charge (ususally) as they would like your business!

    Other possiblities could be

New spark plugs and or wires.

    Fuel filter

    Bad gas? (gasoline)

My gut tells me that you have either the battery problem, that I mentioned earlier, or the EGR/TPS problem.

Keep me informed, as this is not easy without having your car here!

It could be a few things, TPS, egr, temp sensor. Check them with a multi meter clean out the TPS.
Let me know if that helps.
Thanks,
Lee

by rejecting my help you are choosing for me to not help you further I hope you will reconsider the rating and accept and rate accordingly. The throttle positioning sensor and the EGR valve. If you are not a mechanic then I would recommend taking it to one so you can get your problem fixed.
    Thanks,

yes you need a new thermostat or there is low coolant. this will affect the mpg because your overheating and thats why its stalling. dont drive until you fix or you will blow your head gasket if it isnt blown already. change thermostate and check coolant.

The TCC solenoid in the transmission needs to be replaced. It is under the side cover. It controls the converter to lock up for better fuel mileage. If you want to drive car until you get it fixed you can un-plug the connector going to the transmission on the front of transmission. This will keep it from going to lock up mode and keep it from stalling until you can fix it. Common problem.

it sounds like the vehicle is starving itself for fuel... if it runs fine in town, or on close trips... sounds like when your on the freeway, and got the gas down its demanding fuel, and not getting what it needs to run, thats why it will start right back up.. if i were you i think i would start with the cheapest thing first and replace the fuel filter.. hope this helps.

1990 Pontiac 6000 2.5 after driving, car stalls when put in gear.

You need to replace the TCC solenoid under the side cover pan of the transmission. You can also unplug the wires that go to the transmission in the front. After that it will not go into overdrive but it will stay running at stop lights untill you have it repaired.

Car runs good cold but once it warms up when i stop it dies

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
