Im geussing you want to know how to check the oil level on an 1985 golf
if its an automatic open the bonnet look down in front of the autobox
you should see a small dipstick
if you have a manual stick shift the oil level plug is next to point where the drive shaft enters the gearbox the automatic box also has a level plug here but is for the oil level in the differential gear

When driving at about 30 mph occasionally the drive seems to slip and then catch. car is 2005 1.6 fsi with 80k on clock

the gearbox is a computer controlled auto with 4th lock up (O/D) and should, if driven very carefully, change from fluid drive to mechanical drive at about 30 mph.to check transmision carry out the following.
from standstill,put car in drive,no gas,and let the car reach max speed(about 30 ish)then.
from standstill using 1/3 gas pedal (do not move gas foot)let the car accelerate to max speed.
lastly, put car in drive and floor gas pedal(make sure you are alone)then
drive as economically as you can, the gearshift patern will then adjust to your driving style(takes about 50 miles)You will feel the car go from fluid to mechanical drive as a kind of slight drop in revs then ...engage.
assuming you have checked fluid level first of course....

How do i check the back up light switch in a 85 vw golf - manual transmission - gas engine?

place cars ignition in the acc position, but not started, lights on first position, put car in reverse. If the lights do not come on, chances are its either 1) the bulbs or 2) the switch. Switch is mounted on the transmission, and has a simple wire going to it.

1991 vw golf gti- RPM stop working!

judging by the amount of km it has done i would say the rpm drive is faulty, this measures the amount of rotation in the camshaft and shows the "revolutions per minute". when this goes faulty it stops the read out on the dial, so you want to be looking for a device that measures the speed that the engine is turning, if you have, replace it and it should solve the problem
