Question about 2006 Pontiac G6

2006 Pontiac G6 GTP Transmission Drive Not Working

Will go into reverse, will drive in triptronic *manual, however, 1st gear seems to be slipping, 2nd and 3rd work fine* engine just revs in Drive and won't go anywhere. Any suggestions?

    I brought the car to the Pontiac Dealership. They advised that the vehicle needs a new transmission for $3300. Pretty good right for a 2006 car that's two years old. They say it's not covered out of warranty because it's over $36K miles. BS!

    My 2006 Pontiac G6 started the slipping when shifting and also when moving gears from R to D, it jerked. Husband changed transmission filter and flushed the fluid, then also changed a camshaft sensor. no success. Took into a non-dealership, advised the Brake Clutch Drum was stripped, replaced for $2100.00 with no success. Took it back in, advised that the camshaft sensor was sensing low oil, did an oil change, worked one day, began jerking and shifting hard again. Two weeks later. Car is still doing the jerking and shifting hard, emissions light is on again; took back to shop where the club drum was repaired to check seals, advised that it probably needs a new computer and take to the Pontiac Dealer. I AM DONE! Car is being traded in; I am not putting forth more money into a 3 year old car.

    everytime i start to drive, it has a rough start, and first gear slips and jumps into 2nd gear pretty rough. after that it seems to drive fine.

    All gears work manually, in drive it just revs and goes nowhere.

    01 Jimmy (standard) has trouble shifting out of 1st. Sometimes the ABS and Brake lights turn on/off, also the speedometer gauge is not working or jumps while stuck in 1st. I can drive in D1, D2, and reverse. The gas light will go on and the odometer reads empty or full every other time I start the car. If I pull over, turn off and restart the engine, the truck will shift through all the gears and may have some slipping. If the transmission slips, I go back to just driving slow in 2nd gear. What's going on here?

Trans usually coupled (electroically) with engine revs. check computer chip. perform computer diagnostics.

Ford Explorer, slips in reverse and when you put it in drive you have to rev the engine before it will engage. Once engaged it often slips in between 1st, 2nd and then smooths out after 3rd.


Pull the transmission & rebuild it

You should know when they slip
your done or the trans is

So if it had any chance to be fixed, you
ruined that by continuing to drive it

Now you can get out the check book for
about $3,000.00

2003 Grand Am Automatic will shift normal from 1-2 but will not shift into 3 or 4.


Worn clutches or solenoid issues if it is an Alison style box.

Sounds like the clutches for 3rd Gear are worn out. Need to rebuild or replace the transmission.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.8 supercharge, Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E rebuilt 2 years ago. Drove to work (26 miles) and all was fine, got in to leave and put gear selector in drive or 1st and nothing...


Your transmission for the GTP should be the 4T65-HD. If in fact it is not then that could very well be the problem. The 4T65-E is for the other 3.8L naturally aspirated models.

Only reverse works. No foward gears.


No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

Do you have manual 1st? If so, can you shift through the gears...i.e. manual 1st to manual 2nd then 'D' then 'OD'??? Only 1st and 2nd gears use the forward sprag unless the LO/Rev clutch is engaged...i.e. 1st and 2nd if in "drive". If you can shift threw the gears manually then, yes, your forward sprag broke.

If no manual 1st then your sprag is not what broke. Sounds like you blew up the rear planet. If you pull the pan and find chunks of iron and steel, then that is probably what happened. If you have reverse then it is not the pump. If the pump was bad you would have no line pressure and it would slip in rev. or no rev. Not the beef sun shell either because you have rev., a broken sun shell would cause no 2nd, 4th and rev. gears. Either way the trans needs to come out and torn down and it will be easily found what went. Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.
