If your engine light is on take it to auto zone or advance auto they will plug into the engine it will then send a code and tell you what you need to do hope it works out.

I recently have been having problems with my 2001 Ford Windstar shutting down when i go in reverse and it shuts down when i come to a stop. What could be wrong?

it could be a blocked fuel filter ,a bad idle solinoid , a week fuel pump, a bad throttle position sensor ,dirty air filter , If car is not running ruff before putting in gear . if running ruff all the time it could be bad plugs, injectors coils plug wires or any of the above. check for a vaccume leak it is a # 1 problem with windstars. if this was helpful please leave good feed back

97 ford Taurus runs ruff backfires

I would suggest you start with the basics. Check your wiring on your spark plugs to ensure they are in the right order. If you can grab an OBD scanner, I'd start with it as well. It can reveal many mysteries. Your running rough usually sounds like a timing issue. If there are over 100,000 miles on the vehicle, the timimg belt will be suspect.
Best of wishes.

I have a 1995 ford f250 5.8 gas first thing in the morning I have to shoot ether to get it to start after that starts right up idles a little ruff under heavy acceleration it sputters backfires and wants...

Sounds like your fuel pump starting to die. It is not getting enough gas under heavy acceleration which is 100% fuel pump slowly dying. At start up it might not be building up enough fuel pressure to feed the system but the shot of ether and engine cranking helps pressure the system just enough for the fuel pump to trickle the gas and run the engine at low rpms.

2002 ford ranger 4 cyl exhaust backfires after decelerating. Engine runs smooth at times when cool and raining engine runs ruff.

check Oxygen sensor and associated wires. if you have access to a scan tool watch the sensor signal. it should resemble a smooth wave at idle with engine warm, if its anything else you need a new sensor.

Ruff running Engine-no power-fine at idle

It could be one of three things. EGR valve, IAC (Idle Air Control), and last your cat being clogged. Not likely to be a clogged converter unless you have but the Ford through some pretty good hell. I would go with the EGR and IAC first and check those out first then move on from there
