Unfortunately yes you do. There is no access panel so the entire tank will need to be dropped in order to replace the pump. The good news is if the tank is relatively empty its not that hard of a job. Just remember you are dealing with fuel and it will spill as you lower the tank. Please be careful if you try do do it yourself.

Yes. You have to drop the gas tank to change the fuel pump. I would not do this at home! You need a hoist (car lift) and you have to drain the gas from the tank. Most shops would charge about $100-160 plus parts for this service..

How to change the fuel pump

Basicaly your fuel pump located inside of gas tank, you have to lift and secure the vehicle high enough to lose and drop the gas tank!!
Before decided to do this make sure gas tank is near empty lift&secure the vehicle visual check around the gas tank make sure all fuel and evap lines are disconnected nothing hold the gas tank except holder brackets, use under jack and safely secure gas tank( do not use direct jack to gas tank use wooden piece to dont damage it)
use right size socket and wrench lose braket holdet nuts and bolts safely drop the tank and place on safe work place (no smokes or sparks)
locate to fuel pump and remove the locker pin and pull out fuel pump slowy your fuel pump should sale complete assembly so replace pump unit and be carefully complete wire connections (TIPS,,With new fuel pump make sure replace the sealing gasket with correct new one or you gonna have serivce engine light for small evap leak so make it right at first time!!))
reinstall eveything the way you removed it !!

The gas gauge in my 2005 Chevy Trailblazer does not work. The guy at the dealership said that it sound like the fuel sensor went out but the entire fuel pump would need to be replaced.

On these the gas guage is part of the pump and the whole pump needs changed to get the new sensor for the guage. fule pumps tend to last between 7 and 10 years depending on use and how full you keep your tank., The fuller the better because the gas actually keeps the pump cool. You should not let it get below a 1/4 tank to preserve the fuel pump.

Do you have to drop the gas tank in order to change the fuel pump?

The fuel pump is actually inside the gas tank. So unless u want a big hole in your floor board i would disconnect fuel lines and wires to the fuel tank. Remove screws, and ground strap from the filler area. My luck I always have a full tank of gas when the fuel pump decides to go out.. Full tank of gas over your head is not much fun. anyway try to avoid dripping gas, and your ears.... Trust me i know hurts like no other....

It is behind the rear axle. And no. You don't have to drop the tank to change the pump. Remove the fuel pump from the side of the tank.

Fuel pump issues troublesome

Fuel pump may be in the top middle of the tank, the bulk of the work is removing the gas tank to get at it.
