Our son just replaced the front crankshaft seal on his but the check engine light wouldn't turn on unless the oil level had gotten way too low.
Said the replacement wasn't that difficult but he had to do it twice as a gasket did not align correctly the first time.

What is the cause of white smoke from the exhaust and fuel smell?

Not knowing the age and mileage of the car my answer can only be a general one and as always if you are in any doubt get a good mechanic to look at it. Keep checking both the oil and coolant. The loss could be two separate issues.
You will need to check the smoke in a bit more detail. Does the smoke linger or does in disappear quickly? Thin smoke that disappears quickly is not something you need to worry about unless it gets worse and cold weather makes exhaust fumes more visible.
"White" smoke can actually be one of three colours. White, blue or grey. Get a helper to sit in the car and gently press the accelerator pedal steadily for 2 to 3 seconds then release. Repeat 2 or 3 times. Watch the smoke to see if has a blue or grey tint, or whether it is white. Each colour suggests a different problem. See the photo below.

Engine cylinder #2 misfire and smoke coming from rear of motor and will not start.

Well, you may have an oil leak, but #2 missfire may mean a few things.
Pull #2 spark plug and see what's up.
be sure you are getting spark to #2.
Check for a vacuum leak,also.

I have a 2003 Mazda Miata sport edition. I checked my oil and nothing registered I just changed it 3 months ago. I don't see any physical evidence of leakage and no black smoke from tail pipe. What could...

I just had the same problem. I bought a 04 Miata 2 days ago that had just had an oil change. When I checked the oil yesterday and nothing registered on the stick. Then today I noticed some oil on the driveway. I looked at the oil filter with the engine running and saw the leak. There is an oil cooler pick up cylinder is between the oil filter and the block. with the oil filter removed, there is a nut that is not a locking nut which can back off. I took the nut off, cleaned the rubber seal ring between the cylinder and the engine block. I put everthing back together and no more leak. If the seal ring is damaged, it costs $12 ( I Priced one today but didn't need it. This may be the problem you are having.

I have a 2001 Saturn L. Oil is leaking, it is not the head gasket. Tore engine apart and replaced gaskets. Stopped leaking for about 6-7 months and it started to leak again. Did oil change last week...

If you have no visible signs of oil leaking out of the engine then the oil is being burnt. By visible leaking I mean a small puddle of oil under the car after having been left overnight. This can be cured by replacing shaft seals and gaskets. Burning oil is visible as smoke under deceleration (no throttle) and under full power(flooring it). This is due to worn/old valve stem seals(smoke under deceleration) and worn oil rings(smoke under acceleration) This can only be cured by a major engine overhaul or engine replacement. Bear in mind that losing a pint of oil in 1000 miles is acceptable.

Oil consumption

Not exactly a solution, but check your coolant bottle and see what color your coolant is. See if it looks like it is contaminated with oil or if it looks and smells fine.

Audi engine oil leak?

Sounds like a leaking valve cover gasket. The parts are around $50 to do both cylinder heads from It's not a major issue, but it may be a sore point to a potential buyer.
