My sons Imprezza has the engine managment light on and will only rev to low revs. What is the likely cause please? Whilst it may be unrelated the speedo reading has ceased at the same time.

For me, it was the alternator going bad. only some guages would work, and it was in limp home mode.

It has gone into limp mode, mine did it because the speedo cable wasn't plugged in when we got it. If it is going into limp mode it probably won't do it immediately but will do it after a minute or so. Connect the magic wires under the dash and you will get a fault code out of it. 9/10 that will tell you exactly what is wrong.

Sounds like you have a fuel issue. It could be a fuel pump cutting in and out. It could be fuel pressure regulator, or an injector not spraying correct. I think it's time to find an honest educated repairman.

Revs up and down at low revs

you need to clean or replace your idle air control valve(IAC). The IAC allows your engine to idle smoothly by opening and closing a valve that allows air flow to the engine that is monitored by the computer. The IAC get dirty causing it to stick and move slower than it should which causes the up and down idle

Mondeo diesal 2002, glow plug light

Hi

The glow plug coming on on the Diesel Mondeo is an engine management fault indicator. The car goes into "limp mode" when this happens or in other words safety mode is triggered. This explains your loss of power.

To find the cause of this light coming on - the car will have to go on an OBD scanner at a service shop which will read the codes stored in the cars computer and give you an answer as to what is causing the fault to show.

Hope this helps - please remember to rate my answer as ratings are important to me as an expert on the site. Thank You.

Rev counter jumps whilst idling and then engine cuts out

Your problem sounds as if the thermo sensor....which controls the air fuel ratio when engine is cold....is faulty. It is a common fault on this model.
This is not an expensive part, and takes only a short time to fit.
Good luck

Power loss

this is a self preservation device fitted to all newish vehicles. this is usually caused by the cam sensor being faulty or damaged, making the vehicle restrict itself so as not to damage anything while under them conditions. the sensor is not usually easy to get to as it is contained inside the cam housing on the top of the engine.
