coolant cap is fine no bubbling noises, Overheats as if thermostat isn't opening, have replaced it twice so slim chances of 2 in row purchased being bad. Any more help is welcome. Thanks anyway

My 98 sunfire did this as well always hot changed thermostat changed rad and fluid no problems with fan ....eventually found out that the car has a scoop under the front that was missing I replaced that and all seems fine now runniong at normal temp....

My 98 sunfire's fan stopped working and overheated too - got all the fluids changed and radiator checked - but the problem turned out to be that power was bypassing the PCM and it needs a new one....
hope that helps.

If your car makes bubbling noise and loses fluid then replace coolant cap. It fixed mine and is cheap fix.

Runs hot sometimes. Top radiator hose hot, bottom cold. What's wrong?

top hose should be hot, all water from engine goes through upper hose, then radiator to cool and out lower hose.

Pontiac sunfire overheating

hello! I had the same problem with my 2000 Pontiac Sunfire... there might be one of these 2 problems with it.... maybe the Heater Core is jammed and the coolant dosen't flow thru the engine to cool it off, or the water pump is defective.... does the heating works or not? if yes, the water pump is defect, if not, the heater core is jammed, try a ''radiator hose cleaner'' (sold in Napa's or Carquest..) it will act as a kind of ''decloaker''.. if works, good! 15$ solution... if not, replace Heater Core... ~150$

I am having the same problem with my 94 sunfire. changed thermostat. flushed and cleaned radiator replaced coolant. no cigar. any ideas. mechanic says could be water pump but he cannot be sure and it is...

To see if it is your water pump - remove the radiator cap and start your vehicle while it is cold. the water should not circulate due to the thermostat being closed. When it is warm, the coolant should be seen to ciculate as viewed through the rad cap opening. (be sure there is lots of coolant - of course) Also if there is no thermostat - the water will circulate after the engine is started wheather hot or cold if the water pump is working. You say it is a new thermostat so I assume it is not stuck closed.

Water pump is leaking,my engin is running hotter

if engine is running hotter than normal, test the thermostat in a coffee pot, if it is opening fine, then the water pump is going out, and will definately need to be replaced asap to avoid further and much more costly repairs!!!!

Can't get coolant flow after changing the thermostat

You will need to Change the Water Pump. It is still pumping, Just not enough to get the Thermostat to Open.
