Question about 1999 Chevrolet Corvette

The steering column is locked. I followed the directions in the manual but it remains locked and the next step, according to the manual is to tow it to the dealer. It is a 2000 Corvette

I had the same problem on mine ..... apparently their is a recall on the column lock mechanism, that needs to be replaced by the dealer. I had to have mine towed to the dealer for those repairs. The ended up charging me for another part that works with the column lock for 400.00. Please beware.. here is some more info on the Corvette column lock.

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 1997-2004 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. When you remove the ignition key, the electronic column lock (ECL) system prevents turning of the steering wheel. When the vehicle is started, it unlocks the steering. Two conditions can prevent steering while the vehicle is moving:

1. The vehicle is designed so that if the column fails to unlock when the vehicle is started, the fuel supply will be shut off if the driver tries to move the vehicle. If voltage at the powertrain control module is low or interrupted, however, the fuel shut off may not occur and the vehicle can be accelerated while the steering is locked.
2. During quick cranks, the ECL lock pin may not withdraw fully and, in vehicles where there is abnormally low clearance to the lock plate, there may be contact between the pin and lock plate. This can cause a noise or ratcheting when the steering wheel is turned or, if there is insufficient clearance, the steering wheel cannot be turned.

If one of these conditions occurs, a crash could occur without warning.


CORRECTION:
Dealers are to remove the column lock plate on U.S. and Canadian vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and U.S. vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. After the service correction, the steering column will no longer lock when the key is removed.

On Canadian and export vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, and export vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, Dealers are to 1) reprogram the PCM, and 2) verify there is adequate lock plate clearance and, if necessary, replace the lock plate. After the service correction, the steering column will continue to lock when the key is removed.

Refer to the Product Safety Bulletin #04006C for further information.

2003 honda accord/ key wont turn,steering wheel is locked


To fix your problem, you have to turn the steering wheel either to the left or right as much as you can, then try to turn the key in the ignition. When the steering wheel locks, the key won't turn. By manually holding the steering wheel out of the lock position, the key will turn again and you're steering column will be back to normal.

Steering is noisy at slow speeds when turning

ISSUE: Some 2003-2005 Thunderbird, Aviator, and Lincoln LS vehicles may exhibit steering gear squeak when turning the steering wheel, especially during low speed parking maneuvers. The noise may sound like it is coming from the steering column area and may be felt as a roughness in the steering wheel, while turning.
ACTION: Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE: USE ONLY THE FLUID AND ADDITIVE SPECIFIED IN THIS ARTICLE. USING ANY OTHER FLUIDS OR ADDITIVES MAY RESULT IN SEAL DETERIORATION AND LEAKS.
  1. Open the hood and remove the power steering reservoir cap.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 100-00.
  3. With engine off, drain power steering fluid by disconnecting steering lines and clamp plate from steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Removal and Installation procedure in Workshop Manual, Section 211-00, follow only the steps required to disconnect the steering lines.
  4. Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock to drain fluid completely.
  5. Reconnect steering lines and clamp plate to steering gear. Torque retainer to 15 N-m (11 lb-ft) for Lincoln LS and Thunderbird, torque to 25 N-m (18 lb-ft) for Aviator.
  6. Lower vehicle.
  7. In a clean container mix 50 ml (10 teaspoons or 1.7 oz.) of Motorcraft Additive Friction Modifier, Part Number XL-3, with 50 ml of Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid, Part Number XT-2-QDX. NOTE: DO NOT PERFORM STEPS 8 AND 9 ON A HOT VEHICLE.
  8. Pour the above mixture into the power steering reservoir.
  9. Top off (fill) the power steering system with Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid, Part Number XT-2-QDX and reinstall the power steering reservoir cap.
  10. Raise vehicle on hoist enough so the front wheels are off the ground and can be turned from lock-to-lock.
  11. Start the engine and keep it at idle. Remain inside of the vehicle.
  12. Slowly cycle the steering wheel from lock-to-lock for two (2) minutes.
  13. Quickly and forcefully turn the steering wheel in one direction to full lock (either side). Bounce the steering wheel on/off of full lock twenty (20) times forcefully. NOTE: IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED QUICKLY AND FORCEFULLY IN ORDER TO CREATE A PRESSURE SPIKE IN THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM.
  14. Repeat Step 13 in the other direction. Return the steering wheel to on center position.
  15. Slowly turn steering wheel to full lock in one direction (either direction) to achieve maximum pump pressure. Hold at full lock for one (1) second, then turn the steering wheel back 90 degrees as quickly as possible. Repeat this procedure twenty (20) times. NOTE: DO NOT HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL AGAINST THE STOPS FOR MORE THAN THREE TO FIVE (3-5) SECONDS AT A TIME. DAMAGE TO THE POWER STEERING PUMP MAY OCCUR.
  16. Repeat Step 15 in the other direction.
  17. Cycle the steering wheel slowly for 1 minute to confirm that the squeak is corrected and return vehicle to the customer. NOTE: IF THE SQUEAK CONTINUES, REPEAT STEPS 13-16 ONE ADDITIONAL TIME. IF THE SQUEAK IS STILL NOT CORRECTED PROCEED TO STEP 18.
  18. If the squeak is still present after performing Step 17, replace the steering gear. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 211-00 for removal and installation procedures.

Key cylinder replacement on 1995 F 150


To replace that you turn the key to the run position and remove the trim panel around the column than you will see a small hole in the steering column housing right under the key and than you put a small pick in the hole and push the pin in and pull the assembly out. This is one of the easiest things there is to do, first disconnect the battery ground cable, next, all you have to do is turn the iginition to the run posistion, check the next steps:

Remove the steering column shroud and lower the steering column.
Disconnect the switch wiring at the multiple plug.
Remove the two nuts that retain the switch to the steering column.
Lift the switch vertically upward to disengage the actuator rod from the switch and remove the switch.
When installing the ignition switch, both the locking mechanism at the top of the column and the switch itself must be in the LOCK position for correct adjustment. To hold the mechanical parts of the column in the LOCK position, move the shift lever into PARK (with automatic transmissions) or REVERSE (with manual transmissions), turn the key to the LOCK position, and remove the key. New replacement switches, when received, are already pinned in the LOCK position by a metal shipping pin inserted in a locking hole on the side of the switch.
Engage the actuator rod in the switch.
Position the switch on the column and install the retaining nuts, but do not tighten them.
Move the switch up and down along the column to locate the mid-position of rod lash, and then tighten the retaining nuts.
Remove the locking pin, connect the battery cable, and check for proper start in PARK or NEUTRAL.-Also check to make certain that the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE position.
Raise the steering column into position at instrument panel. Install steering column shroud.

Its pissible that you need to program the keys to work with the "PATS" security system, go to the following to this section link: fordf150/howto/patskey.

If you only have two keys for your truck, you can just add the new ignition cylinder keys as "spare" keys.

Turned steering wheel after powering off cuz I am parked on a hill...it locked up and now the ignition is locked too...how can I start the car?


your steering wheel lock is connected to ignition in column, pull hard on steering wheel in direction wheels are turned at the same time turn key, this should free them both up.

Steering is locked, can't shift into right gear


If the steering is locked the problem is in the steering column as this vehicle uses a mechanical interlock combination with the ignition key. You'll need to get the Haynes repair manual for the vehicle and some special tools to open the column up in order to do the repair. If the problem is shifting and you have the brake pressed that is a separate system and teh manual will take you through the steps you need to follow to identify what is not functioning correctly.

Heater core replacement


The instrument panel and steering column must be removed to remove the heater assembly. Two people are required to remove the assembly from the vehicle.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable and wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete the backup power supply.
Loosen main wiring connector bolt in the engine compartment at the left side of dash panel and separate connectors.
Remove radio antenna stanchion and disconnect cable from base of the radio antenna stanchion.
Remove both the right hand and left hand windshield side garnish mouldings.
Do not remove safety belt retaining bolts in next step.

Remove the screws retaining both the right and left front door scuff plates and remove the front door opening weather-strips from body flanges.
Remove the right and left cowl side trim panels.
Remove the steering column cover by removing the three screws along the bottom and pull on the cover to unsnap the three clips across the top of the instrument panel steering column cover.
Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder.
Remove the four screws retaining the steering column shrouds together and remove the steering column shrouds.
Install the ignition switch lock cylinder to prevent the steering wheel from turning.
Disconnect the wiring connectors at the turn signal and windshield wiper switch.
Remove the one screw and A/C evaporator register duct from under the steering column tube.
Disconnect the wiring connectors at the bottom of the steering column tube.
Remove the pinch bolt attaching the steering column tube to the steering column lower yoke and slightly spread the joint with a screwdriver.
While supporting the steering column tube, remove the four steering column tube retaining nuts.
Remove the interlock cable retaining screws and shift actuator cable fitting.
Carefully remove the steering column tube from the vehicle.
Loosen the main wiring connector bolt at the left side of the steering column opening and separate the connectors.
Disconnect the stoplight switch wiring connector. On the manual transmission, disconnect the clutch pedal position switch wiring connector.
Pull back the floor carpet as required on the left and right sides of the vehicle and disconnect the window regulator safety relay switch wiring, and the powertrain control module from the main wiring.
Open the glove compartment to the stop, unsnap the hydraulic lift from the right side.
Remove the three screws at the bottom retaining the glove compartment door hinge and glove compartment to the instrument panel.
Remove the glove compartment.
Reach through the glove compartment opening and disconnect the wiring and vacuum hoses/connector from the heater-A/C evaporator housing.
Disconnect the wiring connector from the speed control amplifier and bracket assembly.
Remove floor console panel:
Open the console panel glove compartment door to access screws to console finish panel.
Remove the two screws, and lift the rear of the console finish panel to unsnap retainers.
Reach under the console finish panel and disconnect wires to fog lamp and ride control switches (if equipped) and cigar lighter socket and retainer.
Lift the rear of the console finish panel and slide rearward to release the two front locating tabs, remove console finish panel.
With the console panel door open, remove the console glove compartment mat.
Remove the center screw from the console (rear of shifter) bin, then lift the bin from the console panel. Disconnect the luggage compartment door release switch and fuel filler door lock switch (if equipped).
Remove the two screws from the bottom of the console panel bin to floor pan.
Remove the two cups and screws. Remove the floor console panel.
Remove the two screws retaining the front of the floor console panel to the instrument panel. Disconnect the remaining wires (main jumper wire) and main wiring, then lift the console panel from the vehicle.Protect the instrument panel surface during next step.
Using a putty knife or similar tool, insert under the left or right corner of the instrument panel upper finish panel and pry up on the instrument panel upper finish panel to release one snap clip.
Unsnap the remaining four clips pulling up by hand, working toward the opposite side of the vehicle.
Remove the two nuts retaining the left side of the instrument panel to the cowl side.
Remove the two nuts and one bolt retaining the instrument panel to the console bracket.
Remove the nut attaching the right side of the instrument panel to cowl side.

How do I remove the ignition lock cylinder from the steering column on a 1978 Jeep CJ7. I already have the steering column disassembled.


here are the instruction the first set are the instruction on how to remove the turn signal switch as you will need them to remove the ignition

Removal & Installataion of turn signal switch
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Loosen the anti-theft cover retaining screws on 1976 models and lift the cover from the steering column. It is not necessary to completely remove these screws.
  4. Depress the lockplate and pry the round wire snapring from the steering shaft groove. A lockplate compressor tool is available for compressing the lockplate.
  5. Remove the lockplate, directional signal canceling cam, upper bearing preload spring, and thrust washer from the steering shaft.
  6. Move the directional signal actuating lever to the right turn position and remove the lever.
  7. Depress the hazard warning light switch and remove the button by turning it counterclockwise.
  8. Remove the directional signal wiring harness connector block from its mounting bracket on the right side of the lower column.
  9. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, use a stiff wire, such as a paper clip, to depress the lock tab which retains the shift quadrant light wire in the connector block.
  10. Remove the directional signal switch retaining screws and pull the switch and wiring harness from the steering column.
  11. Guide the wiring harness of the new switch into position and carefully align the switch assembly. make sure that the actuating lever pivot is correctly aligned and seated in the upper housing pivot boss prior to installing the retaining screws.
  12. Install the directional signal lever and actuate the directional signal switch to assure correct operation.
  13. Place the thrust washer, spring, and directional signal canceling cam on the upper end of the steering shaft.
  14. Align the lockplate splines with the steering shaft splines and place the lockplate in position with the directional signal canceling cam shaft protruding through the dogleg opening in the lockplate.
  15. Install the snapring.
  16. Install the anti-theft cover.
  17. Install the steering wheel and connect the negative battery cable.
  18. Check the operation of the turn signal switch.

Removal & Installation of ignition lock switch
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the turn signal switch as described earlier in this section. You don't have to remove the switch completely, just set it aside.
  3. Insert the key. Position the key as follows.
    • 1976-83: With manual transmission, put it in the ON position; with automatic, put it in OFF/LOCK.
    • 1984-86: Two detent positions, clockwise, beyond OFF/LOCK.
  1. Working through the slot next to the turn signal switch mounting boss, use a thin screwdriver to release the lock cylinder.
  2. To install, insert the key in the new lock cylinder. Hold the sleeve and turn the key clockwise until it stops. Align the cylinder retaining tab with the housing slot and insert the cylinder. Push the cylinder in, rotate to engage, then push in until the retaining tab engages the housing groove.
  3. Complete the procedure in the reverse of removal.

there are some bolts in the column that work loose in the chevrolet columns. they are a pain to get to most of the time is easier to replace the entire column with one from the salvage yard that still feels tight.

Key In Ignition Won't Move 2002 Chrysler Town & Country


The steering column sounds locked. Try turning the steering wheel all the way left or right till you hear it unlock or until the key can turn. Note; You must use force to unlock the steering column and don't be scared because it won't break anything.
