My brake lights won't turn off on my 1989 Toyota Corolla, how can I fix this problem without going to a mechanic?

  • Anonymous Nov 16, 2008

My brake lights turn on by themselves. Sometimes when I press the brake and let go, the lights will stay on until I press the brake again. It drains the battery and I constantly need to jump it.

Look for the brake light switch, it is located under your dash board, beside the brake pedal pivot, or at the end of your brake pedal arm. it is a round metal object with two wire connector sticking out. you may either adjust the nut enough for the pedal to turn off the switch, or if it is grounded. replace the brake light switch.

1998 toyota corolla dashboard and tail no work but, headligths do. please, help me fixing it.

make sure the dimmer switch is not in the off position as this sometimes happens without knowing it.next check the fuses with a test light but you will have to turn the systems on,tailights, blower motor, etc as some fuses won`t activate without the circuit turned on.the amp rating of the fuse will be marked on it.

1994 toyota corolla brake lights won't turn off

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You need to check the brake switch. Your brake pedal contacts the brake switch when it is pressed down. There is a small button on the brake switch that activates the lights. It may be stuck or broke. Try to loosen the button first. If it won't, buy another one. They only cost a few dollars.

My 1994 toyota Corolla will not switch out of park to reverse or drive and the brake lights won't come on no matter how hard I press on the brakes. I have changed the brake light switch and even...

There is a small plasic acess cover (1/2" x1/2") on the base of the shifter. Pry it open and press the button. You should immediately be able to shift. The button is needed because the sensor on your brake pedal is broken (won't activate your brake lights either). Use the button on your shifter to get your car home or to the mechanic so you can get the brake switch fixed. Remember whern you drive you have no brake lights. -Mark

Signal/Dashboard/Brake Lights Are Out! 2005 Toyota Corolla S

Most likely a fuse is bad, get out your owners manual and see which one powers the lights. Buy a good test light and it will help you the rest of your mechanic career. Then you can test the fuses without pulling them out to look at them, and test them electrically. first to confirm they are indeed getting power and then that they are good.
