Could be a bad sending unit (sensor) casing the problem, or maybe something else:
You say that the "gauge is gong back and forth" when is this happening? At idle, then I would suspect the sensor. But other items might be the oil pump pressure regulator or a cracked pick-up tube, not likely, but possible.
Now if the gauge pressure is fluctuating while driving, there could be a host of problems such as: oil pump or main bearings wear or some internal leak.
The best test at this stage would be to connect a manual oil pressure gauge to the engine to see what exact oil pressure is reading.
Don't drive the car until you get this fixed. You could turn a small problem into a big one if the engine truly is not getting oil. A cheap repair could go to 3-4 grand if you fry the bearings in the engine.
Comment back with your mileage and further description of the problem if you want more help.

Replace the oil sending unit (pressure switch) Before doing so, check to make sure wire connected to it is tight. A loose wire can produce same symptoms.

My 2001 3.4liters monti carlos lifters are going bad. If i drive it will it mess my car up. Or lock the engine?

Lifters tap because of low oil pressure. Or extreme amount of dirt. Either way it goes to the crank bearings. Replace the engine.

I have a 2003 monte carlo ss i fixed the intake gasket but now the car losses oil pressure i changed the oil and put in 10 w 40 new filter found out i use the wrong oil so i changed the oil to 10 w 30...

It is hard to say without being able to check the vehicle. It is possible that gasket material, silicone, etc. ended up inside the engine duing the repairs and is now stuck in your oil pump screen. It is also possible that you really do not have low oil pressure and the gauge is "lying" to you.

The way to find out is to remove the oil pressure sending unit and install a manual gauge. Take an actual pressure reading to see if the car's gauge is accurate. If it is not accurate, you most likely need a new sending unit. If you find that the oil pressure is actually low, then it is time to pull the oil pan and look inside to see what kind of damage or debris is in the oil pan.

How do I reset the low tire pressure light on my 2004 monte carlo ss

It will go off soon as you put the right amount of air in your tires or minutes later, and if you are using a spare tire then the light will stay on until you put the full size tire. Good luck

2001 Monte Carlo SS 92,000 have to add quart of oil every other month. Engine is very clean, no smell of burning old and no blue smoke and no leaks on the ground, Use total synthenic oil for high mileage...

No doubt valve seals, the oil gets burned so you usually can't see it.Normal for GM motors, actually the small amount of oil will help the longevity of the engine. They can be changed in a few hours but I would leave it alone. When they get really bad if the car sits and idles you will see some smoke. The seal is just a small o-ring ,they get brittle and fall off.The shop can use air pressure at the spark plug hole to keep the valve up,compress the valve spring and replace the seal.

Is it normaol for the oil pressure gague to go up when excelerating in a monte carlo ss 2001

yes it is. this is typical of most cars - the oil pump is gear driven, as your RPMs go up so does the oil pressure.

Hi i got a buddy who has 2001 monte ss and in the past 4 months i replaced #1 & #2 rockers and push rods and its knockin again i think its the cam any ideasw thanks

Have you tried checking the clearance of the lifters? Try doing a valve adjustment before replacing anything else.

It is possible that the valves are not seated right, or it is also possible that it is a "Rod Knock", which is the sign of a warn engine. Any engine that is over 150,xxx miles needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

Also, make sure the proper amount of oil is in the car. It is a very common problem to run low on oil, or to let the car go past that 3,000 mile change because you think it won't hurt anything, and it can seriously mess up the car.

Especially when you are dealing with newer SS models.
