Question about 2003 Volkswagen Beetle TDI

2003 Beetle Starter failure

I am on the third starter for my 2003 beetle. Before each starter was ruined there was a very distinctive grinding noise that sounded as if gears were grinding or as if the starter was grinding. I took it to the dealershp the service department was not able to make the car make the noise. Finally, the noise became consistant, the starter went out and there was a burning smell afterwards. The starter had a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty...I'm at 11 months and 14,000 miles and very peeved.

The dealership is going to collect on the repair weather it is from you or vw. they always want to fix the concerns that you have but unless they are able to duplicate your concern they cannot correct your issue. Would you really want them be dishonest and just guess what your problem is or would you rather they fix it.

I have a 1999 vw beetle diesel that the starter does not engage when I try to start. I have a new battery that seems to be fully charged but the lights dim when in start mode but there is no noise.

Then remove the electrical starter motor out from the engine, and repair it by replacing the engaging coil & electrical brushes (if necessary).

Very loud noice upon starting, last only a second, sometimes beetle revs up engine on its own. also sounds like a motor boat when running the a/c, driver side window has a mind of her own.

I think I know the noise you are describing. I work on alot of these and about 75% or them do it. It is like a squawking noise as the starter stops turning. It won't hurt any thing and the only way to fix it is to replace the starter.

2002 Beetle - starts but won't keep running.

it could be a bad fuel pump, crank position sensor, broken/misaligned timing belt, etc. basically you need spark, fuel, and air to make the engine run. also the timing belt needs to be not broken and aligned properly.

Noise when cranking up

sounds like dust in the starter moter remove the starter and extend the starter pulling it out with a vice grips and pour4 a small bit of brake fuid on the shaft behind the stater gear(the brake fluid will not atract more dust)

Noise when car is started

Sounds like the starter stays "sticked"on... Check the starter relay or after the sound goes away touch the starter for heat. If its too hot it means it stays on working even when the engine is allready running...
