Question about 1996 Audi A4

1 Answer

Help with car gears.

Hi Dickyl,
My husband and I have been here in Quezaltenango, Guatemala trying to find out what is wrong with the car. Just last week, the car decided it was not going to shift gears, go into a higher drive when we go up mountains. There are plenty of fluids in the car. We just replaced the battery with a new one. We just replaced the oil, oil filter, and spark plugs. And it is still not shifting gears really well. It is our only car here in the country. We are going to take the bus to another town on Monday. Thanks for your help.

Do you have an automatic? also changing all the parts listed does not have anything to do with the trans shifting.

    Hi,

Sorry I can't you you on this one - there are relatively few cars with auto gearboxes here in the UK and I have never owned one in my 40 years of motoring. I guess it's partly because they use 50% more fuel than manuals.

    Good Luck, D.

What car is that? Can you give a little bit more details about the upshifting and downshifting of the gears?

Sounds like a earth problem, check if the connection from the negative terminal is connected to the body of the car, sometimes the copper starts to rust inside the lug, check that the earth running to the engine is also soundly connected. Does the heat gauge needle jump around while driving?

Is your car an automatic? how long were you driving before this happened? could be the plates that push the automatic gears into place. I've had the same happen to me on a ford. I needed a transmission service regardless of how the oil was.
It's hard to tell something is wrong with the transmission specially when its warm as the plates woudl have expanded by then.

Shift Gear locked

Possible there is too much tension on the driveline. Jack up both rear wheels and try to move shifter. I could be wrong but it's the only thing that makes sense at this point!

Whine in the diff - I think. :)

Hi Stephanie, Unfortunately, when you tear into a differential to replace parts like a spider gear, it is sometimes difficult to maintain the same relationship of the ring and pinion, as far as the gear backlash and wear pattern, even if you took careful measurements before disassembly. I think it is much better to replace the complete differential (inner assembly). This is what causes the whine when the gears are not wearing in the same pattern.
Having said that, I would not hesitate to buy a axle assembly from a wrecked vehicle. I don't know what happened to yours, but generally they are a pretty durable part.
The same goes for the seats, you can probably find one at a salvage yard. I think they are leather seating surface and vinyl sides.
Lastly, I would like to thank you and your husband for your sacrifices serving our country.
Hope this helps some.
If you need anything else let me know.

Brake light indicator comes on after stopping, then disappears

Try to have someone press the brake pedal and see if a light is out. This usually is an indicator so that you can know one is out. Also, if they are alright, check the fluid in brake reservoir.
