Question about 1994 Mazda MX-5

2 Answers

I have error codes 0470 and 1402 on my 96 miata. any ideas as to what is wrong? The egr valve seems to work when vacume is put to it at idle as the engine almost stalls. The egr position sensor has a somewhat low resistance at 2.37 rather than the 2.7 k ohms it is supposed to be in my haynes manual. Vacume lines are all connected and clear.

the egr system works with vaccum and the vacuum control is a solenoid, who's controlling by open and close a electro valve,
if the valve is stoke open that allows the vacuum to go to the egr and make it work at the wrong time.

Stalls and surges

sounds like a vacume leak. any engine light? the egr wont effect idle or starting. maybe the throttle position sensor or maf sensor. also check airfilter. there should be i engine light if any of these things are wrong including the egr valve.

Engine seems to have power surges at all rpms and idles a little rough

Sounds like the EGR valve, but may be fuel filter has water in it, I would change fuel fiter if that dont help go to the egr or vacume hoses around the egr.

I have a 97 camry and it 's code is showing EGR problem. The egr valve is working,i think ,at least it's free and moves when i put vacume on it . I thought maybe it's the vacume modulator thats the...

If you are sure the valve is working and the passage is clear....it should stall the engine when you put vacuum to it while idling, then you may have a bad MAP sensor. There was a problem with them on this year. Sorry, I don't have the specs for the modulator with me, I'll try and dig up some info later today. The reason I said MAP sensor; the computer uses the signal from the MAP when it runs the diagnostic to check EGR operation. I'll add to this solution later today, in the meantime, does applying vacuum to the EGR stall the engine? If not, you'll need to remove it and clean out the intake manifold.

Engine check light, code 401 low egr vacum egr

The EGR and the lift sensor may look perfect from the outside but the under side of the EGR valve and the EGR passage (small tube) are the REAL WORKING parts.

The carbon inside the EGR passage tube and the underside of the EGR valve must to clean out.

Make sure you has a NEW EGR gasket before you start the job.

It's a 2-3 hours job.

If you do not clean the EGR passage tube the Nox emission will get higher (check you past emission reports).

first make sure egr valve works.with engine running aply vacum to valve, if idle drops, valve is ok.if not you may have a bad valve or possible carboned up egr passage.

Throttle/Idle/running problem - wants to run too fast, or stall out

RPM's up and down check EGR valve and sensor. EGR valve and sensor control idle. That's why your getting the surging on rpm's and this could be giving out the other codes. If mass flow was bad car will not start and the same for the map sensor. O2 sensor measures gas and air for right mixer. TPS controls 0-60 speed as in throttle respons.
