    1volvoman,

thank you for your help. I did figure out the different sizes. I had a doubt because I thought when I untied the connections there were two wires to one of the of the connections.

When I put them back together, I wondered if that "'second wire" was not in fact the brace holding all the cables together tied up with the ground.

So far I left that brace hanging and it works.

I want to share my success, I had 5 batteries from different distributors dying on me within one or two days...I changed the brushes( were short) of the alternator (called also voltage regulator I found).and also covered the ground line connected to the alternator with electrical tape (the protection around that line was missing in many spots and volvo does not offer that part anymore.)

I do not know which one solved the problem, but so far my battery is ok after 2weeks.

Thanks again for your answer 1volvoman

How do you get the alternator out of a 2003 Focus SE, 16V Zetec DOHC?

Disconnect battery ground cable
Remove the ground wire (black) from the alternator
Disconnect the positive wire (red wire held on by a retaining nut) from the back of the alternator
Now disconnect the wire harness from the alternator
Remove the drive belt
NOTE: Some models use a belt tensioner that applies tension to the drive belt.
The best tool to use for this job is the serpentine belt too.
If you can borrow one from a neighbour you can get one at PartSource. (Part# 648451)
On other models you will have to loosen the adjusting bolt on the alternator bracket.
If you're not sure about how to remove the drive belt, visit your local PartSource for free print outs of car specific instructions.
Take off the mounting bolts from the alternator bracket
Now remove the alternator from the engine compartment

Installing Your New Alternator
Put the alternator in the engine compartment
Install the mounting bolts that connect the alternator to the alternator bracket
Connect the alternator wiring harness
Now connect the positive wire to the alternator
NOTE: Your new alternator should come with a retaining nut.
Remember to remove the nut before you install the positive wire.
If it doesn't keep the old nut.
Connect the ground wire to the alternator
Now install the drive belt
This is a great time to replace your old worn out belt. When inspecting your old belt look for signs of cracking, oil soaked, hard glazed, splitting or fraying.
All these signs mean it's time you replaced your drive belt.
If your vehicle no longer has the belt routing diagram under the hood, visit your local PartSource for a free print out of the belt routing diagram.
Reconnect the ground battery cable .

1986 Volvo 4cyl alternator question. How many wires are connected to the alternator ? I know one is the hot lead.

There should be a pair of wires going to it to supply the field coil voltage( this is the voltage applied to the field coils to produce the magnetic energy to generate the power in the stator assembly)...there shold be 12 volts going to these wires

I had a senior moment and during the duration between removal and replacement (alternator) forgot where the wiring connects. Volvo 240. Only three wires. One from Batt to B+ but my dash light (Battery ) is...

the thin red wire should go to the blade connector on the alternator. The battery cable which should be red and hot goes to the B+ connector. The other wire should be black is a ground , goes the alternator ground terminal --a D- .
