Question about Mitsubishi Montero Sport

1997 montero sport ran hot and now is rattling and idleing very rough. this is a 3000 24 valve v6. smoke started to come up through the drivers side timing belt cover and the rattle is on the opposite side. what caused the engen to overheat and what is the likelyhood of catastrophic damage?

    vehical is sitting still when running rough and smoke is comming from timing belt cover. will not stay running eather.

    did not see any blow back from the radiator. it is running extremely rough and will not stay running at idle. how much trouble is it to pull the timeing belt covers and where do the timeing marks need to be located? i am alittle afraid to run the motor long at all. the rattle started after the motor cooled down and was restarted for a second time. i cant tell if it is a lifter noise or what. it is comming from the top of the motor and on the opposite side the smoke is comming from.

    water pump locked up resulting in the overheating problem. after restarting the motor the rattling started and then the motor went dead. pulled the timing covers and found the water pump locked up and the motor had jumped time, also found the tensioner in pieces. am pulling a compression check to see if valve damage or head damage occured. very likely have a damaged valve. thank you for your help

Bro you blew the motor it should never rattle or smoke you can fix it but you need to rebuild the whole motor once anti freeze gets in the oil if it's not drained almost instantly it will work it's way into all bearings and destroy them as for the smoke you prob broke a water pump belt and it got caught around the pully

Look in your radiator for a milky looking substance floating on top of the fluid or if you pull out your dip stick and the oil looks milky you probably blew the head gaskets. If not it could just be the timing belt.

You will have to work through a process of elimination.

When an engine overheats you run the risk of causing serious damage. You'll need to run a compression test to find out if the head gasket has been blown. Overheating can result in a warped head which causes the gasket to fail. If you have low compression in any of the cylinders but especially any two adjacent cylinders, you will need to pull the head.

I would say that the overheating was due to the thermostat, and that you've already done catastrophic damage. It's sounds like you've blown a head gasket, and possibly damaged a valve, rocker, lifter, push rod, or spun a crank bearing. If the rattle is coming from the top of the engine, it will be a valve, push rod, lifter, or rocker. If it's coming from the bottom, then it's a bearing. You should have a mechanic check it. When at idle take the radiator cap off, if you have any blow back, pressure, or bubbling, then you've blown a head gasket.

    You'll need to remove everthing from the front of the engine in order to get to the timing maks.

The cause of the engine come Overheat.
The WATER PUMP. on your car Is driven with the TIMING belt.
My solution is :
Don't drive more Because if the TIMING belt when Broken.
The HEAD VALVES can be damaged. Be careful.
Get the car to a Autorepair SHOP. or if you can do yourselft.
REPLACE the water pump and the Timing belt.
And check all the pulleys after you remove the covers and timing belt.
Inspect the SEALS replace if need.

If you need assistence to do yourselft.

    I recomend remove the timing cover.

    If you remove the covers. you will see . Maybe the WATER PUMP Bearing damaged, or any other pulley inside.

    Making the Timing Belt BENT, Causing Friction with the Timing cover, When the plastic heat due to a friction made smoke.

    Or if any PULLEY Bearing is Lock.

    If you can do. Remove the upper covers.

    But if you Know something on mechanical job.

    You can do yourselft.

    I can give the step to do. Include the TIMING marks.

    But if NOT I recomend, Try to find a mechanic for this job.

    Because Is A delicated job.

    If you remember is what I told you ..

    The problem was on the timing belt and water pump.

    I was right.

    I told you remove the Timing belt, YES or NO..

    One more thing. if the TIMING belt Skip more that 3 dents.

    The HEAD VALVES will come damaged. Normally INTAKE SIDE.

Hi idle after changing sparks plugs

start by checking for a lose vacuum line that is what it sounds like to me u may have pulled one lose and not have seen that u did

Only smokes whem idleing and then stops when i am moving

Actually I don't think it stops when you start moving. More like the smoke is being diluted withthe higher volume of exhaust. I would look at the valve seals first. Also do a compression test. If you find it smoke real bad on initial start up in the morning or after sitting for awhile, then probably valve seals. Good luck and let me know if this answers your concern.

Rough idle / what is correct idle 25 td. swb pajero

I have a 98 Montero Sport and to adjust the idle all I needed was a phillips screw driver. Check owners manuel for Idle speed and remember to have lights off when adjusting. Also it showed the idle range posted on the hood underneath.

The most likely senario is that the water pump went bad which caused the overheating in the first place. Then after the engine shut down, the water pump seized up. When the engine was restarted, the timing belt started to smoke because the water pump, which runs off the timing belt, was not turning. Since the engine overheated to the point of shutting down, blown head gaskets are a possibility. Put a new timing belt and water pump on it and start it up. If it runs OK, you're good to go.
