Hi.

The first step you need to do is: get the car Scanned with a COMPUTER Diagnostic.
because the LOCK up selenoid look to be Stuck on.
Or the the Trans. is not goin Down shift.
After you scanned you will be able to know the problem.
Mechanical or electrical.

I hope this can be a good step to start your Diagnostic.

Anything I will glad to help. As more I can.
I'm a mechanic.

Get rid of the check engine light on code po740

The TCC is the torque converter control solenoid. That's is what's used to give you overdrive.

That really needs to be checked out by a competent trans shop to determine what's wrong in the circuit.

The cylinder misfire is usually caused by the secondary ignition components, like the plugs and wires. If it's due for a tune up, replace them all.

There is a problem in the circuit. There are other possibilities besides the solenoid.

The solenoid is internal to the transmission and it's going to require special equipment and knowledge to test the circuit so it's not something you can do yourself.

I am reviewing trouble code p0740 and one of the possible causes for this code is actually a misfire. This code is set if the desired drop in engine rpm when the tcc solinoid, is near maxiumium duty cycle. The first thing they have you do is check for any misfire codes and repair, first. This affects rpm while in "lock up".

I had a 97 Dakota and they are known for ignition wires arcing. Also the tcc solinoid does not control overdrive as was explained to you earlier. Click image for zoom...

Symptom:
P-0740 TORQ CONV CLU, NO RPM DROP AT LOCKUP

When Monitored and Set Condition:
P-0740 TORQ CONV CLU, NO RPM DROP AT LOCKUP
When Monitored: Continuously with the key on. Not in Park or Neutral and no other MIL (trouble codes) illuminations.

Set Condition: If the TCC cannot achieve the desired drop in engine RPM when the TCC solenoid is near maximum duty cycle. Three consecutive bad tests are required to set the code.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- MISFIRE TROUBLE CODE SET
- VEHICLE STALLS (TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID)
- TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SHAFT(S)/SEAL DEFECTIVE
- TRANSMISSION FLUID CONTAMINATED
- NO PROBLEMS DIAGNOSED
- TCC SOLENOID WIRING HARNESS OBSERVABLE DEF
- TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH DEFECTIVE
- TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT DAMAGED

Hope helps.

I have a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1 when the transmission goes into or out of lockup it set up a vibration, Tranmission works good.

It sounds like you have a transmisson shutter when shifting . General motors has had a lot problems with there TCC solnoids causing this problem . Now with out driving the car i can not say 100% that this is the problem . but it is a common failure . I would have the car driven by a transmisson repair shop and see if they think it is a solnoid problem or and inturnal problem with it .

I cant find were the transmission control solenoid is located at and need to replace it

what kind of transmisson is this 4t40or 4t60 or 4t65 or 4L60 ..well most general motor solenoids are located on the the transmisson valve body . which means on a rear wheel drive the transmisson pan needs to be remove to gain access to the valve body . On a front wheel drive the valve body is located under the side cover on the transmisson . Now if i remember rigth there are 3 or 4 control solnoids . 1-2 shift 2-3 shift and a Tcc solnoid . you need to know which one to replace and what location are they on the valve body

I got an engine light code po 742 what does that mean?

The code means that the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) in your transmission is staying engaged after the computer has commanded it off. This could be caused by a sticking TCC Solenoid, By internal hydraulic pressure leakage, by a faulty Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit, or a faulty Powertrain Control Module.

If your engine has been stalling when you come to a stop - especially after getting off of the highway, then you probably have a sticking TCC Solenoid.

This really needs to be diagnosed properly to keep from spending a bunch of money on parts unneccessariily.

2002 explorer with 5r55w transmission has code po741 I have changed solenoid pack and installed new torque Converter still has code The Computer is commanding the tcc to apply

Try cleaning the connections at the transmission with some terminal cleaner from Radio Shack.

Is it stalling when stopping? If yes, you may have to temporarily cut the wire to the TCC.

My 1993 Olds Cutlass Supreme drives great most of the time. But after putting gas in it, as I am tooling along within the next 1/2 hour, if I slow down to turn or stop, the car begins to shudder and...

The problem is " The Torque Converter Clutch, (TCC) solenoid" is what actually causes the TCC to engage and disengage. When the TCC solenoid receives a signal from the ECM, it opens a passage in the valve body and hydraulic fluid applies the TCC. When the ECM signal stops, the solenoid closes the valve and pressure is vented causing the TCC to disengage. If the TCC fails to disengage when the vehicle comes to a stop, the engine will stall. This is a common problem with older GM vehicles.

Toyota carina injection 1993 2000cc auto cuts out as soon as I

Does the vehicle restart and die when you put it in gear. If answer is yes then you need a torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC) or a brake light switch. The brake light switch cancels the TCC at a slow down or stop.. If it doesn't cancel it you will stall out. If your vehicle restarts and dies once you put it in gear then its the TCC. If none of these symptons fit your vehicle get back to me .
