Spark knock under a load 5.0 engine I have to run without spout connector and retarded in order for truck to run decent but I still have the spark knock regardless

Definitely a timing issue,distributor,ignition module,possibly timing chain jumped a tooth.I would attach a scan tool and look at the timing the PCM is seeing when all this is going on.For the meanwhile,run 93 octane as it will help to ward off the spark knock.Spark knock is actually preignition,otherwise known as detonation,and it is very tough on the rod bearings and pistons

Inspect/Test/Replace


A defective knock sensor may cause engine detonation or reduced spark advance and fuel economy. When a knock sensor is removed and replaced, the sensor must be tightened to its specified torque. If the knock sensor is installed tighter than it should be, it may become too sensitive and provide an excessively high voltage signal, resulting in more spark retard than required. When the knock sensor is installed looser than it should be, the knock sensor signal will be lower than normal, resulting in engine detonation.

To replace the knock sensor:


  • Disconnect the knock sensor wiring connector.

  • Then, unscrew the sensor.

  • Remove the knock sensor.

  • Reverse the procedures to install the part.

DTC P0326 - Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor) High Voltage ( click HERE )
Knock sensors are used to detect engine pre-detonation (engine knock or ping). The knock sensor (KS) is usually a two wire sensor. A 5 volt reference is supplied to the sensor and there is a signal return from the knock sensor to the PCM (powertrain control module). The sensor signal wire informs the PCM when a knock occurs and in what degree of severity. The PCM will ****** the spark timing to avoid pre-detonation. Most PCMs have the ability to learn spark knock trends in the engine during normal operation.

If the PCM determines that the knock is out of the ordinary or that the noise level is abnormally high, P0326 may set. If the PCM senses that the knock is severe and cannot be eliminated by retarding the spark timing, P0326 may set. Keep in mind that knock sensors cannot distinguish between a knock from pre-detonation or one from engine problems.

If an engine knock can be heard, fix the source of the mechanical problem first then retest. Make sure the proper octane of fuel was used in the engine. Using lower octane fuel than what is specified can cause a ping or pre-detonation and may cause P0326.
Unplug the knock sensor and check for water or corrosion in the connector. If the knock sensor has a seal, verify there is no coolant from the engine block fouling the sensor. Repair as necessary.
Turn ignition to run position with engine off. Ensure that 5 Volts are present at the KS connector. If there is, check for proper resistance between KS terminal and engine ground. You will need a vehicle specification for this. If resistance is out of specification, replace the knock sensor. If resistance is normal, plug KS back in and idle the engine. Using a scan tool in datastream, observe KS value. Does it indicate a knock is present at idle? If so, replace the knock sensor. If the knock sensor shows no knock at idle, then tap on the engine block while observing the knock signal. If it doesn't show a signal that corresponds with the taps, replace the knock sensor. If it does, verify the knock sensor wiring isn't routed next to ignition wires. If there was no 5 volts present at the knock sensor connector while unplugged with KOEO (Key on engine off) then go back to the PCM connector. Turn ignition off and clip the knock sensor 5 volt reference wire in a location that is easy to repair (Or remove the wire from the PCM connector). With KOEO, check for 5 volts on the PCM side of the clipped wire. If 5 volts isn't present, suspect a bad PCM. If 5 volts IS present, repair short in 5 volt reference circuit.
Since the reference circuit is a shared circuit, you will need to check all engine sensors that are fed a 5 volt reference. Unplug each sensor one at a time until the reference voltage returns. When it returns the last sensor you plugged in is the shorted sensor. If no sensors are shorted, check the wiring harness for short to voltage on reference circuit.

Knock sensor circuit is shorted to voltage
Knock sensor has failed
Moisture in knock sensor connectors
Incorrect fuel octane
PCM has failed

Possible Solutions:

How do i set timing on a 1977 mg midget without a timing lite


Perfect timing for fuel efficiency and power is 3 degrees before it causes audible valve ping or knock when the engine is hot and under full acceleration up a hill. To get close with the distrib, advance it (turn it) from a retarded position at 2500 rpm until smooth running gives way to slight kicking. You will feel and hear it. Lock it down and road test, listening for the valve knock. Backfire is more associated with retarded timing.

Yes. The knock sensor is located in the engine block, the knock sensor retards ignition timing during a spark knock condition to allow the E.C.M. ( electronic control module) to maintain maximum timing advance under most conditions.

Yes it can. The knock sensor retards the timing due to irregular levels of octane in todays gasoline, to eliminate or reduce what is called a spark knock. A malfunction could cause your car to lose power when car is under a load or uphill due to pre detonation or constantly retarded spark to the engine. If not replaced it can cause engine damage or head gasket damage. Hope this helps.

Is it a good buy


If the tires are good, brakes are good, engine is running without any knocking or other wierd noises, body is decent without a bunch of rust, interior decent, the electrical system is functioning, no major leaks, clear title and under $2500 it would be a decent buy if the milage is under 150,000.

WHAT IS ENGINE CODE PO332?


The knock sensors (KS) produce an AC signal when specific frequencies are detected. When the engine operates, the powertrain control module (PCM) learns a minimum and maximum frequency of noise of normal engine operation. The KS system monitors both knock sensors in order to determine if knock is present. If the KS system determines that excessive knock is present, the PCM retards the spark timing based on the signals from the KS system. The PCM then retards the timing until no knock is present. When the PCM detects a frequency that is less than or more than a defined range, DTC P0327 will set for a failure in KS 1 which is located on bank 1 on the drivers side of the engine or DTC P0332 will set for a failure in KS 2 which is located on bank 2 on the passenger side of the engine.
But, the problem doesnt have to be the sensor, it could be bad ignition coil, bad spark plugs, bad/no/too much Fuel.......

First, I would like to mention that most knock sensor codes are not caused by the knock sensors, but a mechanical problem with the engine. The knock sensors cannot differentiate between noises caused by mechanical problems like a bad pulley bearing, bad motor mount, noisy alternator bearings, etc. and spark knock. knock sensor codes are set when the computer has retarded the timing as far as possible to compensate for ignition ping (Spark Knock) and the noise still exists.

With that said, here are the instructions.

Remove the Intake Chamber assembly.
Disconnect Injector connectors.
Disconnect the heater hose from the Intake Manifold.
Remove the 9 bolts. 2 nuts, 2 plate washers and Intake Manifold assembly.
Remove right hand engine mounting stay and water outlet.
Disconnect the following hoses and connectors:
Radiator inlet hose.
Engine coolant reservoir hose.
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor connector.
Engine Coolant Temperature Switch connector.
Ground strap connector.

Remove the 3 bolts and right hand mounting stay.
Remove the wire band.
Disconnect the water bypass hose from the inlet housing.
Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts, 2 plate washers and water outlet.
Remove the 2 gaskets.
Disconnect the Knock Sensor connectors.
Remove the Knock Sensors.

Where is the location and what is the appearance of the spout connector on 1993 3.0 ranger xlt ..it appears that mine is missing..would this cause engine knocking under acceleration in a high gear ??


The SPOUT connector, if disconnected, would prevent the spark from advancing. So, you would have less spark knock if disconnected. You only disconnect it when you are running a test for codes.

Disconnect the single wire in-line SPOUT connector or remove the shorting bar from the double wire SPOUT connector. (In engine comartment)

The internal circuitry of the ICM will have one of two possible arrangements, push start or computer controlled dwell (CCD). The push start system allows for increased dwell, or coil ON time, when starting the engine. The ICM on this system determines when to turn the coil ON based upon engine rpm information. The coil is then fired, or turned OFF, whenever a rising edge of a SPOUT signal is encountered (Figure 5 ). The SPOUT signal, short for SPark OUTput, is a digital signal generated by the PCM providing spark angle information to the ICM. The SPOUT signal on the push start system controls only the firing of the coil. The falling edge of the SPOUT signal is ignored. The CCD system, however, does use both edges of the SPOUT signal (Figure 6 ). The SPOUT signal for the CCD system is same as in the push start except that the falling edge is now generated to control the time at which the coil is turned ON. The coil ON time, or dwell, for this system is thus entirely controlled by the SPOUT signal. The ICM does not internally determine when to turn the coil ON as it does on the push start system. It responds directly to the SPOUT signal it receives.
In the case that the SPOUT signal line opens from the PCM, the ICM will use the PIP signal to fire the coil. This results in a fixed spark angle of and fixed dwell.
