Question about 1991 Buick Park Avenue

3 Answers

After driving 20 to 30 miles the car loses power and starts backfiring. I would say it is heat related. I can drive 30-40 miles in the morning but only about 20 miles going home in about 80 degree temp. The mass air flow meter has been cleaned and I have unplugged it when the problem starts to no effect. I had a new fuel pump installed at a garage and I replaced the ignition module myself. I bought one new coil today and changed all three and it still has not solved the problem. I am able to keep the engine running and drive it bucking at 20-30 mph. Has a 3.8L - new plugs and Carquest Prestolite Wires also. Looking for answers. Thank You Jack from Hastings, Minnesota

One More thing About your problem .

It's possible that the CATALYSTIC CONVERTER. can be damaged stuck.

See the catalystic after the car is backfiring,

If is hot, overheated, small really bad..

If you can go to a Muffler shop to chack the CATALYSTIC.

some place don't charge for check..

Because can be a problem too.

Or any RESTRICTION on the EXHAUST system.

1999 Cirrus battery loses charge when car sets.

Here is a neat trick for that problem (my 1999 Cirrus drain issue could not be solved) Disconnect the negative cable for a minimum of 5 seconds, then reattach it. Doing this before you go to bed insures a charged battery in the morning. It is when the engine is turned over that the battery drain begins again (probably the anti-lock brake motor) Try not to perform this too often, as it will mess with the oxygen sensors over time, which reset their data from the power disconnect. Oxygen sensors in this car gather their needed data from about 40 miles of regular driving, and it is recommended to drive the car often to engage these sensors occasionally. The car might drive slightly rougher after the battery disconnect because these sensors are not fully activated. They determine crucial fuel / oxygen ratios to deliver to the engine and its components...

What happens if the drive belt breaks

if a drive belt breaks, the debris can interfere with other engine components and do additional damage. rule of thumb belt life is 6yrs or 60000 miles. the belts operate critical engine systems ( alt, water pump, power steering pump) not something to short cut on. belts are noisey when cold due to additional load from battery use when starting or cold fuuids. have belts and tensioners checked for wear and correct operation

92 Cadillac STS Seville starts to lose power and backfire after driving 5 to 6 miles

Based on the information provided, it may be the catalytic converter. Your car is exhibiting some of the symptoms. Another symptom is extreme heat coming from the unit which can usually be felt through the floorboards. A trip to the muffler shop for a free check would be the next place to go. If the CC checks out fine, you could have any number of issues including a bad computer, plugs, wires etc.

It sounds like you might have a clogged catalatic converter on the exhaust system.

While driving engine will lose power and start backfiring shut off for a while, restart and engine runs fine, replaced fuel filter two weeks ago, also had oxygen sensor and fuel level sensor replaced two...

usally back firing and no codes is a bad fuel pump or clogged pickup screen which is on the fuel pump.. you can get alge from the blended gasoline. see if you can run a prssure gauge to the out side of the hood and drive the truck, when the problems starts to happen look at the pressure. we had a k5 blazer do something similar. it would have 57 psi at start up and about 10 miles into dribving it we would have loss of power adn backfiring through the trottle body. feul pressure would drop to 17 psi. our pick screen was full of black alge from water in the gas.

Acceleration - cannot get above 40 miles per hr.

If the engine revs up while in drive and running at 40mph, your transmission is probably slipping. Try checking your transmission fluid level. If it is OK, I would get it by a garage to have them look at it to cofirm.
