Question about 1999 Audi A4

1 Answer

1999 Audi A4 Locking mechanism

The locks on my car all of a sudden do not work either manually (button in car) or by remote. When I push the remote the Hazard lights flash and turns on the alarm as usual but, nothing moves mechanically (the knobs do not go up and down). I have tried interchanging the fuses but, nothing changed the result. Any suggestions....I don't want to take it to a mechanic or a dealer to get robbed for something that might be simple.

Thanks. How do we know if it is the pump or the lines? What do these pumps run? Thanks for the help j_del.

It sounds like the vacuum pump has gone out. The locks are vacuum-pump operated, and they're known to eventually fail on these and VW cars. Check that out - in my 99, the unit is in the trunk, passenger side. You have to remove the storage well between the wheel arch and the taillight, and pull the carpeting back, and the unit is down there just a bit below floor level.

I suppose it could be the lines - anything is possible - but I've never heard of a problem with them. Since the pump is mechanical and is the part actually doing the work, and the lines are just hollow tubes that are hidden away pretty safely inside the body of the car, I'd really lean toward the pump in this case.

Yep - I'd get in touch with Shokan Audi Salvage in Shokan, NY (www.shokan.com) - they're a VW/Audi salvage yard with tons of parts cars. I've dealt with them before after they were recommended by several people, and found them to be very helpful. They'll ship anywhere as well - go to their website and you can get a phone number from them. You might even run the symptoms by them as well - they may be able to give you additional feedback on the problem (although I'm only presuming that).

Central locking not operating with the key or manually. I never had any problems with central locking of my Audi A4Tdi car but suddenly it stop working. I have checked batery and replaced them but still...

It's probably the vacuum pump for the lock mechanism. It's buried in the passenger rear of the car, accessed from the trunk. Pull out the little "pocket" bin between the right rear wheel well and the taillight, pull up the carpet, and the module is down in there. Swap it out for a new one and you should be fine.

1999 Audi A4 Locking system not working.

This normally indicates that one of the pressure hoses has either popped off, or has a leak..the hoses run from the vac pump to the doors, with several T connections in between..Start at the pump and trace from there..Check for popped hoses at the T connections, the pump, and at each door lock actuator (inside each door)..Listen for hissing sounds when the pump is running, this indicates a leak.
