Possible turn signal switch. Mine went out with the same problem I could jiggle it to get the brake lights to work.

SOURCE: brake lights and turn signals

Buck Mint
I think your solution is right on.  After further investigating my problem, I found that after pressing the hazard flasher switch several times, sometimes my turn signals would work sometimes they would not.  I fixed my problem by replacing the multifunction (HF, TS, wiper) switch, but I think your solution might have worked and saved me dollars.

SOURCE: chevy trailblazer - brake lights do not work

try checking the brake light switch attached to the brake pedal, very common problem. has about 5 contacts in it ,they all operate different things. If you have a scan tool with live data readings you can watch them all. also check fuses and bulbs ,but you say the signals work so that seems ok.

SOURCE: 2002 yukon no brake lights but third brake light works

ed7882 I had the same exact problem and thought it was a fuse or the wiring. Come to find out it was just a blown bulb. They are inline together with the cruise so if one blows it all goes. So change out the lights and that should fix it for you.

1995 Buick Riviera, brake lights won't come on except for the one in back window

I am thinking that the brake lamps in the rear taillamps went through the turn signal/hazzard switch. Play with your hazzard switch and see if they start working. If not, check the brake lamp switch with a test light. I believe the high mount stoplamp had a seperate wire than the taillamps for brake lights.

I have a 1990 Chevy Suburban v1500. All lights work except for the Brake Lights and Turn Signals. The Blinker switch on steering column is broken, other than that everything is fine.

Yes, the brake light signal on American cars is routed through the turn signal switch. A new switch should restore both your turns and your brake lights.
American cars use the same bulb filament and same wire to the rears for both brakes and turns. Press the brakes when turning and both rear brakes will light, but since one side travels through the flasher relay, that side will blink, while the other side has a steady light.

Turn signal,brake lights not working

I would check for voltage at the turn signal switch. The brake lights go thru the turn signal switch, except for the high mount light.

On my 1999 Chey Lumina. My brake lights wont come on except for the one in the back window

I was having similar issues with my '95 Lumina. It started out with the passenger side brake light not working and the turn signal switch on the column acting funny.
Eventually, someone pulled-up next to me and told me that I had no rear lights at all.
It turned out to be the turn signal switch in the sterring column.
Hope this helps.

Just bought second hand 98 chevy lumina and someone stopped me saying I have no brake lights, so I checked and I only see a place for backup lights and turn signal lights. Why do I not have any break...

The brake light in the rear window and the main brake lights are on a different circuit. After the signal leaves the activating switch on the brake pedal arm, it splits. One circuit goes straight to the high mount brake light, the other goes into the turn signal switch. If the rear turn signals work but the brake lights don't, suspect the turn signal switch, not the bulbs and wires. Better to check this before removing and checking bulbs, wires and fuses. It is a common problem with the W-body cars like Lumina, Monte Carlo, Buick Regal, Olds Cutlass and Pontiac Grand Prix. (Approx 94-99 models). Part number is GM 190005031 (w/o radio accessory control) or 19005032 (with radio controls)

1989 Cadillac rear lights stay on

It may be a turn hazard module under dash.that is the culprit! The power to the third brake light does not go through the module, but the rear brake lamps power is controlled through this module. I am looking at a drawing of one and it looks like it has two connectors with about five wires in one and six in the other. It has some cooling fins on it also.
