Fuel pump relay & fuel pump

After recently replacing the float and fuel pump, truck ran for about thirty minutes then shut off. I replaced the relay switch the truck started right back up. But these repeats it self.l I was told to check the nersha switch, which was fine. But I did notice prior to this, fuel gage worked fine but while replacing the fuel pump I noticed that the float needed to be replaced so I did replace it and made sure to properly check all wires, all boats, in order to make sure it was connected properly. It started right up. Then shut off again. This repeats it self

When you turn the key on the pump should run to purge the system . so now you have fuel pressure for starting. this stage lasts about 10 seconds then the fuel pump doesnt turn on again till the computer see's oil pressure then turns the pump on. if the inertia switch has been activated it wont send the first amount of fuel.

Security set. Turn the key on for ten minutes, off for thirty seconds. Try to start. That's the reset. There is a relearn also. Three times this, start after the third time. Have a charger on it.

I guess I'll start with the basic questions. Are you sure the pump is loosing power, and will it run on starting fluid ?

I owned a 1988, Oldsmobile 88, that did that. after several hundred $ of "repairs" - It was that pump IN the gas tank that had gone bad.

if it ran fine before this happened then check the fuel pump relay first. it may have shorted out when jumped off, or when battery was replaced

Engine shuts down

The only way to know for sure is to hook a gauge to the rail and check the fuel pressure when it won't start.
Sitting for a few minutes and restarting is normally a sign of a relay or coil cooling off.
There should be a EEC relay that powers the dist module and ECM.
I know you said you have spark, but it could be something else
related.
Also, if you have spark at the right time and no fuel pressure, you should be able to use starting fluid to substitute.
I don't suppose you have dual tanks and the switching valve is the problem ?

Both fuel pump relays run hot. I have replaced both of them. The truck started and ran for about 30 minutes then quit. I replaced the relays and it ran for a few minutes and quit again.

You could have a bad fuel pump relay switch. The fuel pumpmag-glass_10x10.gif relay switch gets the fuel pump running in the vehicle during the start cycle. The terms fuel pump relay and fuel pump relay switch are used interchangeably. The fuel pump relay begins its job when the automobile operator turns to the ignition on, but before the motor is actually running. At that point, the fuel pump relay in some cars sends a signal to the ignition switch, which in turn sends a signal to the fuel pump to turn on. Others fuel pump relays have actual circuitry inside of them that receive the ignition signal and directly signal the fuel pump to engage.

Have a great day!

Losing power to fuel shutoff relay

The power for the shutoff relay actually comes from a secondary winding on the ignition coil itself. Why the enging would shut the fuel pump off is that as the engine ran for a while the coil gets warm and then breaks down or opens up the circuit for the fuel shutoff relay. Fixed by replacing $85.00 coil.

Losing power to the fuel pump

well that sounds like a relay. if your car is an automatic, double check than you replaced the ASD and fuel pump relays and not the trans control relay.
if its not the relay, its probably the ECU(PCM).
