I just fixed the exact same problem on my contour. If the window brake light is working the brake light switch is ok. The problem is the swich on the steering wheel. (The signal, high/low beam switch.) I replaced mine and everythig works fine.

Check to see if the brake light switch under the dash at the brake pedal is bad before you go too much further.

1998 Mystique brake lights don't work while the window brake light does work.

Try a continuity test, not sure where to find the electrical scheme but if you obtain it, use a tester or borrow one to test the continuity of the wires of both taillights, could be simple as a cut wire.

Tail break lights don't work. Window break light does work however. Bulbs have been replaced.

Check the brake light fuse. The high mounted brake light (third brake light) is on a different circuit than the brake lights. Hope this helps.

Broken brake light 1997 toyota camry

sounds like a bad bulb. the filament in the bulb will bounce around and reconnect its self sometimes. when it is out tap the lens with your finger tips if it illuminates replace the bulb and recheck. the problem may lay elsewhere, but this is a cheap easy place to start.
