How do i trouble shoot automatic transmission that shifts from park to reverse with the gear shift but the car will not move?

Sounds like the shift cable is off the transmission under the hood. Raise the hood and check to see if the cable is moving the linkage going into the transmission when the shift lever is moved in the car. Be sure to have park brake on.

1995 nissan sentra automatic trasmission will not go into passing gear

Gear shifts happen depending on how far the gas pedal is
pressed & the load on the vehicle

Transmission pressures change as you drive under different conditions,so the shifts happen at different speeds

There is no passing gear

If you have a 4 speed, you have 3 forward gears & an overdrive
forward gear, plus torque converter lock-up

You saying you have no 4th to 3rd downshift or whatever

Maybe the transaxle is failing mechanically inside-worn out

My 2001 5 speed PT cruiser shift lever quit shifting gears , it moves back and forth but feels line it is not connected to anything and it's in2 gear ? Any suggestions ???

there is a rubber bushing inside the shift linkage that needs replaced. You can see the linkge under air cleaner near transmission or its the ones under shift handle but I would check under the hood first because its usually those

2005 Corolla's manual trasmission shifts gears, it clunks

hi mate , sounds like the SPIGOT bearing its a little bearing that allows the gearbox to be at a different seed than the engine flywheel and if this is in bad condition it will take the gearbox front shaft to a higher speed than comfortable for gearshift , in the meantime when you go for 1st or reverse gear just engage a gear like 4th without taking your foot off the clutch and then go for 1st or reverse, this will stop the gearbox spining long enough for a smooth shif, oNLY USE THIS METHOD WHILE STaTIONARY and see a professional when you get time.

The gear shift is stuck in park , is there a way to release it?

I don't suggest you drive it this way, but if you just need to move it, go underneath to where the shifter linkage is and disconnect it from the trasmission. Then move lever on transmissnion into gear, if you can't move it. your transmission is locked up, not your linkage

5 speed trasmission goes in gear, but won't move

This may be a bad clutch plate. This will not let the transmission turn if the plate is slipping. Hope this helps. Good luck.

1997 pontiac sunfire manual transmission won't shift out of gear.

What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.

I have a 2004 kia rio 5 speed started to shift into gear hard, now it wont shift into gear at all

there are 2-3 bushings underneath the car that can be changed.....they are about 5-7 dollars each that you can pick up at the dealership and do it's not hard at it on ramps and chock the wheels to make it safe....get underneath and then have someone in the drivers seat to shift the gears(while it's off) so you can see where the moving points are, then just undo the bolts and replace the bushings or you can just remove or loosen the bolts and lubricate them with lots of grease....I would try the grease first, it should do the trick...Kia will charge you about $130 to do it for you...
