There was gas in the back tank but for some reason the truck wouldn't start. It was as if it was empty. We filled up the front tank and then it started.

A two tank truck. Are you sure the tank selector is working? The pick up tubes in rear tank bent, or busted so where it's not picking up fuel at bottom of tank?

You will need to check the fuel pressure. If you it is fuel injection, you will have a connection on the fuel line to the motor under the hood. No fuel pressure indicates one of three problems. Fuse in fuse box, relay in relay box under the hood or fuel pump located in fuel tank.

sounds like a vapor lock. older cars needed a set of points . they kept firing times in sync with fuel delivery , valves opening/closing try that.

Check for fire to the coil pack. These have a tendency to go bad on these cars. Could be a cam or crank sensor, these also go bad. If you haven't changed the plugs in 30K, this is due also, wires every 60K. May need to actually get it hooked to a machine to find out for sure.
