I maintain 4 Toyotas, and all of them do this very thing.
I have learned to live with it.
I have taken them to Toyota dealers, who say there is nothing wrong with them.
I have taken them to independent transmission shops, who have changed the oil and serviced the transmissions, and they were not any better.
So now, I let the car warm up for a few minutes, and it shifts a little sooner.
God bless your efforts.
I think this is an electronic trans with no modulator. Overdrive is really not a gear but rather torque converter lockup. Torque converter may have completely failed.
Toyota 4 Runner has either auto transmission or manual transmission. If it is auto trans, it could be due to the following reasons:
1.Wrong grading and classification of transmission oil. (ATF Dexron II).
2. Clogged transmission filter. (Clean or replace)
3. Worn out clutch friction discs and pressure plates. (replace)
4. Broken fly wheel and/or torque converter. (replace)
5. Check transmission control knobs and switches for if they are at their actual position where they are supposed to be.
The knock sensor fault may be preventing the transmission from shifting to OD. The main engine computer also sends commands to the transmission computer. Your transmission valve body is controlled by electronics.
Is this a stick or automatic?
If its a stick it could be a defective clutch pedal bushing .
Automatic, torque converter clutch solenoid engagement shrudder.
means it's going out or the transmission oil will need to be changed, check the transmission fluid if it is brown and smells likes onions have the fluid changed and the filter, this may not fix it but you may get lucky, if it's the band or clutch assembly you will have to rebuild transmission.
