Try turning the engine by hand. to do this use a socket and ratchet on the big bolt on the bottom center pulley at the front of the motor, if you can turn the engine then you need to shim the starter.

you say it would start with no shims at all? but now it wont? i would double check the part application, there are only 2 starter types that will fit that year but 1 is metric and have them do it by vin code.

Have you tested the battery? it sounds like the battery is almost totally dead. take the battery out and take it in and have it tested

Probably not the timing chain, but it could be the crankshaft.
Its rare, but sometimes the main bearings and crank will wear enough to allow the crank to move forward or backward. Its also possible the flywheel is bent so that part of the ring gear is in the right place and part of it is not. But you should be able to turn the flywheel with the starter out and see the variance. Using shims raises the starter gear off the flywheel teeth. Its also possible the flywheel teeth are worn enough that the starter gear is riding over the teeth and locking up.

1983 monte carlo 305cid when you turn the key to start absolutely nothing happens battery is new and good double checked that does not attempt to turn over nothing happens

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. You need to check your ignition fuse in your fuse box. If the fuse is good, make sure the terminals ends on your battery wires are not loose. Make sure they are clean. If your battery connection is good and the battery as well, try changing the starter or starter solenoid. Once you find it, try hitting it a few times to see if it will start. Since the battery connection and battery is good at this point, change the starter. Make sure all the wires to the starter are connected. When working on the starter, make sure you take the battery terminals off.

1997 monte carlo 3.1 No crank problem. Battery good, all lights work. Starter cranks if jumped between solenoid terminal and hot starter terminal. Have tried both keys.

Ifit turns the engine so the bendex drive gear engages with the fly wheel then the starter is bad its nit switching inside it and you just by passed the bad switch. If the bendex drive dosn't engage then the solinoid is the cause of the problem

hi, this sounds like INTERNAL SHORT IN THE STARTER MOTOR( the brushes wire contacting the comutator) meaning the BRUSHES are WORN. smell of burning from starter motor. (somtimes the starter motor stays engaged to the flywheel and the starter motor go's supersonic and distroyes itself). but get other advice first. in case i am wrong. DO NOT RELY ON MY ADVICE. gerry

Battery good, starter good, Alternator good. Car will not start or even turn over. All dash etc; lights but no further action. Any idea what could be wrong. you can hot wire it buy not crank it

Most likely it is a Starter Solenoid or ignition switch if starter turns but motor does not crank the bendix may not be kicking in on the starter even if it is turning also check flywheel for broken teeth.....Good Luck

Won't start getting nothing when i turn key

Recheck all your connections, battery. starter, look for fuseable link on small wire going to starter. Might want to chk.that wire with test light when key switch is in start position and see if it lights. If it does not light might be starter switch under dash on steering colume.
