Question about 1992 Chevrolet Lumina APV

1 Answer

Runs sluggish at start up. It will cough, sputter, chug for about a minute(it seems). If you can get the rpm's up, it will sort of walk out of it. We've recently replaced the spark plug wires, oil, fuel and air filter, added sea foam to the fuel tank, and filled the tank with premium gas

  • Possible vacuum line related, suspect problem was related to EGR valve, as this was replaced Nov 07. Problem came back this past weekend. noted vacuum line to EGR valve had no vacuum. I removed device-located top front side of the engine near serpentine belt, noted foam filter inside-cleaned filter reassembled and problem cleared. I believe this device (part of emissions System, investigating official name) may be the culprit. This device has two vacuum lines coming in and 1 electrical connection obove the serpentine belt. with the foam filter removed I was able to stall out the engine by placing my finger over the orfice (care-full of the fan belt). This must be an electrical solenoid that goes intermittent.

Device is" EVRV solenoid assembly". Circuit description: the ECM operates the regulator (EVRV) to control the EGR valve. It's worth noting to check the Fuse labeled ECM1 at the fuse panel as this is direct power source. A defective EVRV will illuminate the check engine lamp and error Code 32 will be set (per tech pub). Check to make sure the source vacuum (from the TBI base) is not restricted before T/S this device.

Check the mass air flow sensor (clean both heated wires with carb cleaner and Q-tip). does not always work...sometimes they are actually bad. Also check map sensor. Check for vacuum leaks at all hoses and fittings. If engine rpm drops sufficiently, engine vacuum will drop which may have caused a/c malfunction (controls work with vacuum signal) so I wouldn't worry about that 'till the run problem is dealt with.

Regarding the heating issue, sounds like your thermostat is stuck open so the coolant isn't heating up. (May need replacement) Does your engine temp guage show it running colder than normal?

    1. had my air intake (throttle area) cleaned.
    2. adjusted the throttle's intake until choke or cough is gone.
