Battery goes dead. Will take a jump start. If I remove the positive cable while truck is running the engine will die. I was told that meant that the alternator was bad. Is that true?

Yes...if the alternator is charging, it could supply the necassary voltage to sustain the voltage to keep the truck running,

without it..the engine would die...

Battery went dead so I jumped it with a power pack 350 amp. It starts but runs rough and eventually dies and all lights flash and speedometer needle jumps back and forth.

Sound like your alternator is shot. Do the test ..After you charge the batery or get it boosted if you remove the positive battery post OFF the battery and the engine dies right away your alternator if shot .

Battery dies unless positive cable is disconnected & then reconnected to start it.

Could still be your starter relay or starter itself. Turn your headlights on and then crank. Do headlights dim greatly when cranking?

Dead battery on a 2005 Lincoln towncar

You should be able to jump start it. Before connecting cables make sure the ignition is off on both vehicles also do not let the black and red jumper cable clamps touch . When connecting cables connect the red cable to the good batterys positive terminal first. Next connect the other end of the red cable to the positive post of the dead battery. Third connect the black cable to the good batteries negative terminal. Last connect the other end of the black cable to a good ground on the dead car, this can be a nut or bolt or part of the frame. Start the engine of the good car, rev the engine slightly then try to start the good car. Remove the cables in reverse order from installing them.

Daughter called me ..car wont start. checked battery at Autozone...it is good. someone stopped to help them and bang on startere and it starts up. Bad starter. Starter replaced. Next day daughter...

it sounds like you have blown fuse to the Alternator.. I don't know what car you are talking about but they charging systems vary.. But if alternator isn't getting all the power it needs it won't charge. this should be checked.

good luck

After jumping a dead battery the car will lose power and die while driving. It will however sit and idle without a problem. I did try testing the alternator by removing the positive lead from the battery...

You never jump a dead battery
That is an unsafe act and could
result in an explosion

You must charge any battery fully,
to start any diagnostic proceedure

You never remove either battery cables,
while a vehicle is running, another practice
that will bite you sooner than later

It sounds as though the battery is not
capable of taking a charge and offers
too much resistance to run the car hooked up

If you havent replaced the battery I would start there. If the battery has a dead cell in it then it will effectively remove the charge that your alternator is putting out causing your vehicle to stop running because it has no power. I would jump start the car without the battery hook up and remove the cables and see if it runs that way. If it does you have a bad battery.

P-reg 96 escort, my battery is dead after only a few hours however when the car is running (after jump starting it) the immobilisor light comes on for about a minute, then starts to flash every 3 seconds....

Bad Alternator.
After Starting or Jumping your vehicle: Remove the Negative Cable from the Battery.
If the Engine dies or runs really rough it is a bad Alternator.
The Battery Starts the Engine and runs nominal operations. The Alternator runs the Engine after it is Started by the Battery.
If the Engine does not die or runs really rough after removing the Negative Cable, then you have a malfunctioning Battery.

I have a 1992 F150 5.0 that wont start all i hear is one loud click

This sounds like it is either a bad battery with a possible dead cell or a bad solenoid. If you haven't done so try jumping the vehicle by connecting ground to the engine block and disconnecting the positive cable from the battery and connect the positive jumper cable to the positive cable directly. If the vehicle starts then the battery has a dead cell. If it starts and dies when the cable is disconnected you ahve a faulty alternator or charging circuit.
