The problem is there is not enough electrical power or { voltage }. It could be because the alternator is not working very well and you have a poor battery. The way to tell is get a $ 5 meter from the dollar store and measure the voltage on the battery 1. when the car is off it should be 12.6 V DC. 2. When the car is running it should be 13.8 - 14.0 V DC. If it doesn't raise up to 13.5 V DC. your regulator is bad or the alternator is defective. If it does go up to 13.5 V dc or better then the battery or the posts need to be cleaned. If the alternator is defective you will be able to measure a bad / intermittent contact through the alternator brush { primary } with your meter.

Gday ate, geoff here, well it would seem that the brake lights are trying to earth through the park light system as they are in the same socket in the rear, check the earths from the light pack at the rear, and the then go from there tracing the earth circut even to the point of cleaning rust, mould/moss from them, geoff.

Engine light on, when I apply the brake lights go dim and act as if the car wants to cut off. also pulls funny. I need to know what could be wrong. the mechanic says it could be a computer problem.

Did your mechanic tell you what code triggered the check engine light on,It sounds like your alternator is not charging enough,Then you apply the brake lights which take more power away from the engine.

Vehicle will not start. lights and power comes on,

OPEN BONNET AND MAKE SURE THE BATTERY TERMINALS ARE CLEAN AND TIGHT, SWITCH ON THE HEADLIGHTS AND TRY TO START THE ENGINE , IF THE HEADLIGHTS GO VERY DIM WHEN YOURE TRYING TO START , THE BATTERY IS PROBABLY FLAT , TRY JUMP START.

Front lights ( Dims ) come on when I press break pedal

Sure sounds like someone transposed the power leads from the brake peddle and the light switch - or the ground is bad - and a back feed of power is causing this.
I suggest pulling the Headlight fuse to determine if that feeds the head or brake lights. Same with the brake fuse.

Ground feed back is most likely and most difficult to identify. A bad connection to ground - somewhere - can do some weird things to lights.

Isolate the brake booster by pinching the vacuum line connected to the booster and try braking. If this works your brake booster is bad.

Headlights wont turn on

The sound system was causing to much of an unpredictable power usage on the headlights and the fuse has blown as a safety precaution.

1993 saturn sl engine dies

I just had this problem with my 97 sc1. I found that the driver's rear tail lights were staying on dim when ever the car was running. In my situation, the cluster of wires that ties to the rear tail light is also the wires that tie to the fuel pump. Every time you hit the brake, it shorted out and cut the power to the fuel pump. Test for this problem by pulling one of your tail light bulbs, if the car shuts off or wont start without it, this could be your problem.
