I need to know does it cut out like it is back fireing? if so than what you need to do is replace the cap and rotor if there is a hair line fracture in the cap than it will cause it to do that....

My 1988 Nissan Pathfinder is driving fine and then stalls. The transmission gauge says hot but the transmission is not hot.

The temperature sensor would be measuring internal heat. If the transmission fluid reaches critical temperature the sensor would set of the warning.. I don't know if that has anything to do with the stalling. You need to have the computer scanned to find out what is causing the stalling problem.

Engine at idle rpms go up and down/fast and slow?

check for vacuum leaks first, especially at the EGR valve very common.if none found remove and clean the idle air control motor it is a small motor located next to the air intake hose coming from the air filter.one of these should solve your problem.

Replacing the 2.4l engine by 3.0 engine .

may be easier and cheaper to increase the manifold branch size, install a ram air induction kit, and install high lifter cams, triple tip plugs, and high out coils
