Question about Ford Thunderbird

1 Answer

1965 ford thunderbird. drives well, burns oil heavily through on exhaust pipe. has needed gasoline put down the carborator in order to start once. starts most of thetime if i pump it one long time and three quick times. otherwise has not let me down. i just need to know what should i do to the engine before i start investing in the exterior. i like the car and want to keep it, but i'm no mechanic enough to know if the car is worth theinvestmnet. i paid 5k for it 2 months ago. thanks, pierre

thanks. this was very helpful and I'd like to discuss the car more with you. this site is n ew to me, so i'll take your lead in how to really discuss the car and how to determine everything that really needs to be done to it before I begin to invest in the exterior. I've decided to keep the car, but I really want to put it tn top shape but I am not a mechanic. Since you responded, I'd like to go with you if you're interested, but again, i do not know the process. please respond. pierre

Is the oil burning at cold start only and goes away when it warms up? If it is, your valve stem seals need replaced. The carburetor's choke isn't working anymore. It may need rebuilt but then again it may be cheaper to get an aftermarket carb. Edlebrock 1406 600 CFM carb. isn't very expensive and works really well. Let me know when the car does its oil burning thing, whether it be all the time or only at start up. tiqautoperformance@live.com.

Hi, I know Fords very well. Instead of clogging this site up, email me with your questions and I'll help you the best to my ability. I like the early iron Fords as well. I drive a hot rodded up 68 Mustang and own other early Fords. Shoot me emails to the email address I provided and we can go from there. So I guess send me an email on when the oil burning is happening and any other questions you may have about the car. tiquautoperformance@live.com

1991 Ford Thunderbird leaving black stain on ground when I start my engine

Stain from the exhaust pipe, or liquid leaking? Exhaust pipe powdery stain from carbon buildup in engine. Either runs rough, needs plugs, or hasn't been driven fast enough to heat the engine. Insufficient information, check engine light on? Runs good? Other than stain, what else going on.

Intercooled 3.1 1996 horizson. replaced turbo. still getting white smoke. water is overheating with in 10mins of driving. losing half to one litre oil.

the HONDA Horizon (Isuzu wonder box)
what engine. exactly .?
3.2 L 6VD1 SOHC V6
3.2 L 6VD1 DOHC V6
3.5 L 6VE1 DOHC V6
3.0 L 4JX1 TD I4
3.1 L 4JG2 TD I4
x1 or G2?

floods, wot cranking cuts fuel and starts any flooded engine,
it's overheating that wins the First order failures rule sets.
nothing else matters. cure that first.! find cause! first.

sounds (im deaf there, lol) that smoke is out tail pipe end and dissipates fast and is not smoke but steam, , oil smoke smells like burning oil and lingers. steam smells sweet like burning Antifreeze.
AF steam is a blown head gasket or far worse.
do a compression test first to see if it's even worth fixing????
most are NOT. (unless free labor, sure)

first learn steam from smoke
serious , watch moms tea pot. see that steam goes away fast.and very uniquely , now watch burning oil.
remove dip stick, drop the drip of oil on hot exhaust manifold.
smell that, that is oil burning, and lingers.
this will last you a life time of blown engines..... just one look and bingo. (my instructor in 1965 did in front of class)

got oil in the AF/ CARBON chunks in same.
water in oil, ? pan, engine . milky oil.
rad leak down test fail? can be lots of reasons even a cracked block.or head. not just gaskets.

I recently had a 100,000 major service on my 2004 TL. Within a couple days I noticed a pronounced smell of burning oil. I have since noticed a puddle of oil has formed under the car and just today there...

It's probably OK to drive. I imagine they failed to get the oil filter properly seated and you're getting a little leak there. DO BE SURE to check the oil level before you drive it and add if necessary.

Car just started running rough with white gas smelling smoke comming from exhaust

Sounds like head gasket needs replaced or worse one of the heads is cracked leaking antifreeze into cylinder burning out the exhaust, would advise not to continue running as you can lock up the engine if antifreeze is leaking into the engine oil. It will seize the bearings blowing your engine.

My truck is burning oil like crazy. im always toping off in between oil changes up to 4 quarts. i dont see any oil leeks! its a 97 ford expedition 4x4 with a 4.6

This is indicative of worn piston seals, or faulty head gasket - where the oil is burned in the ignition of the gasoline.

Worn piston seals will show in blue exhaust smoke when under heavy accelleration or start-up.

Need to replace o2 sensors on a 1997 thunderbird

you will need to crawl under the car and look at the mufflers where they come out of the motor and behind the catalytic converter. you will probably have one before and after the catalytic converter on both pipes. You will have to count the wires once you find them. They will be screwed directly into the exhaust pipe.

You don't state which fluids were changed. Exactly which were changed? Also are you sure that what was changed was exactly refilled?
