I checked the fuse (good), the fuel pump turns on (relay good), and changed the fuel filter, yet the only time my car starts is when I pour gasoline directly into the carb. What am I missing

I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy. It's been parked for several months due to transmission problems. When my husband tried to start it several days ago the battery was dead. We were able to give it a jump and it ran just fine. So I bought a new battery and the darn thing won't start at all now. It's cranking over fine but it's not getting fuel. We can't hear the fuel pump engaging so we were told to check the relay. We switched all 3 relays around in the glove box and that didn't help. We think we found the ones under the hood but want to make sure. There were 3 located on the firewall relatively close to where the glove box is. We switched those 3 around and that did no good either. Are those the relays that we should have been checking? When gas is poured into the carburator it does start and run for a moment. Does this sound like it's definately the fuel pump? Anything else we can check?

    Thanks!

No fuel pressure indicates one of three problems. Fuse in fuse box, relay in relay box under the hood or fuel pump located in fuel tank.

SOURCE: truck won,t stop

Crack your fuel line before the fuel goes into the carb. crank it while inspecting the fuel line, fuel should pour out. If fuel doesn't come out check your fuel pump.

SOURCE: my 1999 masda 626 won't

check relays/fuses first then the pump if you know how to test it
the pump is easy to test locate any fuel line unplug it tell a friend to make a quick one key turn if squirts fuel then pump is fine
but check the pump relay first to make sure and to begin with simplest
it seems you can tell it is the pump but you don`t know where to start

SOURCE: ran out of gas-truck won't start-replaced fuel

you probably have air in the lines, if you have a carb, spray some quick start into the carb and turn it over, if it starts and then dies when the starting fluid has run out, you probably need a fuel pump, since the running of the car should have blown out any air that was in the line, If your car is fuel injected, loosen the bolt cap at the end of the injector line that supplies the fuel,, and tap the key once,, ( don't start it,, ) just turn the key on and off 3 or 4 times, this should blow fuel out of that loose bolt head, if it does your getting fuel, if not, back to the fuel pump, also you can check this link, http://www.aa1car.com/library/us1296.htm

Maybe your problem is with the one or many injectors, if just one is bad, you will have problems. Get yourself a multimeter and set it to read in ohms and find what spec the injectors should be at. If out of spec, then you need to replace that one injector(s).

My 2001 Chevy Malibu won't start.. in September if

sometimes the new fuel pump goes bad, it does happen, if you disconnect the fuel line @ engine and hold it in a can or bottle, have an assistant crank engine, but do not start it, if you have gas coming out, your pump is working, careful , it will come out fast !!!!!!!!!!!! have a rag ready. now you can move on to find the real problem.

Turns over but won't fire

If a starter is able to crank the engine but it won't start you usually have either an electrical or fuel problem. It's also remotely possibly that it's compression. If an engine has proper fuel, spark and compression, it will start when you crank it. So your challange is to find out which part isn't working right. Start with fuel. Spray a little starting fluid into the air intake while someone tries to start the engine. If it starts briefly when you're spraying starting fluid, you probably have a fuel delivery problem. That could be injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, relay, fuse... who knows what until you check into it.If it doesn't start with starting fluid, check the spark. Pull a plug wire and attach it to a spare sparkplug and set the plug on a solid metal part of the engine. Have a helper crank the engine while you watch the plug. If you have a good spark, it might just be out of timing. In any case, you'll need to start isolating the problem. Find out which part isn't working then you'll know what to replace/repair.

Fuel pump leaking oil

Sounds as though the pump isn't seated properly. I know the one bolt is hard to get to, however, if the pump isn't seated properly, it won't bring fuel up to the pump. May possibly need another gasket as well. But, from what the symptoms sound like, it's not getting fuel from the tank to the pump and most likely from the pump not seated properly.

2001 grand am 2.4 wont start and it is not the pass lock i changed the fuel filter and the pump comes on

did you install the fuel filter correctly for direction of flow.this can cause no fuel flow.there should be an arrow on the filter indicating the flow of fuel.also if this isn`t the problem then have the fuel pressure with a gauge and flow checked as if its not within specs the car won`t start.

My 93 prelude won't start i change the fuel pump i check my fuses so what now i need help

You will have to see if your getting spark and fuel. If your getting both it should be starting either timing or injector pulse isn't working maybe. If your not getting spark, you will need to check your ignition system. If your still not getting fuel then you have a relay or maybe a computer problem. This isn't exact but a short list of what to check so you can reply with more information.
