Question about 2003 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

Car starts to buck and then shuts off. We were told it was the main computer, had it replaced, to no avail.Took it back and were told there was water in the gas tank, they drained it.... Continued with the problem, but started to hear a clicking sound, then the car would buck and stall sometimes. It would run fine for 5 or 6 days and then without warning - other than the clicking sound - it would buck and stall. We've had the alternator replaced - but that also did not fix the problem.............what is causing this? Also the service engine light is now on and sometimes will blink on and off when it is acting up. We have spent at least 1200 dollars so far.......the mechanics actually said they are just guessing........it will not act up when they have the car. The only time it did - was the first time we took it there - and it broke down when they were test driving it.........that is when they said it was the main computer.

Is this a V6 VQ35 or 4 cylinder QR25?? If the check engine light is flashing the car is not running on all cylinders. Misfire detected by the ECM/computer. The code for the check engine light is going to be misfire code, that will tell you which cylinder misfired. Need more info as to which powertarin you have (V6 or 4 cylinder) They both have their own bugs. Let me know. Oh. and how many miles on it also.

So far we take the key out of the ignition, clean it off and wait 3 minutes. We can go somewhere, shut off the car again and we will have to do this all over. It is getting to be a pain. It doesn't...

The problem is the VATs security system, Sometimes the key goes out (little black chip in key). Sometimes the actual TDM (computer) goes, and thats an expensive problem.

Cheap fix:
Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well. Theres alot of sights out there that explain it.

Never worry again fix:
Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of their page......... They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks.

1997 GMC Sierra. drove in the garage last nite. came back out and truck would not start. Turn ignition switch, dash lights, headlights, radio come on. then as I finish turning the swithch all the way to...

The problem might be your Vats security system. This causes the car to either "not start" or "shut down" while running, or start for 5 seconds and then die. (depending on the system) If the security light flashes, i guarantee that this is what the problem is. 1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shuting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix...

The 96 park avenue will start great and run great. No security light comes on and everything runs smooth. No bucking or hesitation. A great ride. Then all of a sudden it will die. Lights stay on and radio...

It cannot be the VATS system. The TDM, that is the core of the VATS system, is engaged only at the time you start your car. I have a problem exactly like yours on my 95 LeSabre and just discovered it is the alternator that sometimes charges and sometimes doesn't and when it doesn't, the battery's voltage goes lower than a certain threshold and the computer (PCM) is unable to work anymore and shuts down the engine. Took me months to discover this!
